July 17, 2009 — Leonard W. Sandridge, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the University of Virginia, on Thursday received the 2009 Tourism Achievement Award from the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The award was presented at an evening reception at Old Trail Village, in partnership with the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce's Business After-Hours Event.
"Through Leonard's leadership and vision during his tenure at the University of Virginia, he has helped unite the community and enhanced the vitality of our regional tourism industry," said Kurt Burkhart, executive director of the tourism bureau.
"I'm humbled," Sandridge said. He credited the University's employees with creating a welcoming environment for visitors. "I'm simply here on their behalf, accepting an award they have earned."
Sandridge, who has worked at the University for more than four decades, plans to retire in December 2010.
