U.Va.'s McGuffey Alley to Close for Garrett Hall Renovation Oct. 13-Nov. 29

October 11, 2010 — To accommodate renovations to Garrett Hall, McGuffey Alley on the University of Virginia Grounds will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic from  Oct. 13 through Nov. 29.

While the alley is closed, the construction fence on the south side of the building will be completely removed from the sidewalk, allowing limited vehicle access to the south end of the Lawn.

Pedestrian traffic will remain routed along the sidewalk south of the building.

When renovations are completed in July, Garrett Hall will house the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.

Garrett Hall was constructed in 1909 as the University's dining hall, and converted to offices in 1959. The current work will preserve the historic great hall as a multi-purpose work and gathering space, restore the original two-story lobby and provide administrative and faculty offices, as well as student work rooms and offices. The building will receive new heating, ventilation and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression and data systems.
