Members of the University of Virginia’s national champion women’s swimming and diving and men’s tennis teams were honored Monday on the White House lawn in a ceremony that recognized NCAA champions from the 2022-23 academic year.

Dubbed “College Athlete Day,” the event featured speeches from U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and NCAA President (and former Massachusetts Gov.) Charlie Baker. UVA swimmer Alex Walsh and tennis player Jeffrey von der Schulenburg were the Cavalier representatives on the stage for the remarks.

“It was a very special experience,” said von der Schulenburg, a native of Switzerland who earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors this spring. “I had looked at the White House from afar before, but never from that close up. Being there with my team and all the other athletes who have worked so hard to make it there was really cool.”

Both the Cavalier tennis team and women’s swimming and diving team were repeat national champions. The swimming and diving team took the NCAA title for a third year in a row with a dominant performance in March.
