In an ongoing effort to reckon with its past of slavery and segregation, UVA on Monday launched an awards program and a commission in memory of Gregory Swanson, its first black student.
UVA honored the first African-American student to graduate from the University's School of Law. In 1950, Gregory Swanson, sued the University for his right to attend. At a ceremony on Monday, Swanson was honored with a portrait and a scholarship award in his name.
A few years ago, a group of scientists estimated on a global scale that one-fifth of PM2.5-related deaths could be avoided by eliminating agricultural air emissions. “There’s a very tight link between growing food and ammonia-based small particles in the atmosphere,” says James Galloway, a UVA biogeochemist who studies how nitrogen cycles through the environment.

In a paper being published Feb. 5 in Tax Notes, professors from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business and UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce report that this could result in a median drop in earnings of $100 million for 211 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 needing to re-value their net deferred tax assets. For the median company, that figure is equal to about 10 percent of prior net income. The total negative financial effect overall on these companies could total $108 billion.
Obtaining the consent of inmates willing to subject themselves to research projects provides an analog to prisoners willing to consent to organ donation. The Institutional Review Board for Health Sciences Research at the University of Virginia identifies inmates as being members of a “vulnerable population” requiring protection from coerced or involuntary consent.
According to the study, the largest endowments reported in the state are the University of Virginia with a $6.3 billion endowment at the end of fiscal year 2017; the University of Richmond at $2.3 billion; and VCU at $1.8 billion. Average growth for Virginia schools that participated in the study was 10.8 percent.

Garrett Graff's 2011 book, “The Threat Matrix,” explores the transformation of the FBI under UVA Law alumnus Robert Mueller's leadership. Appointed by President George W. Bush, Mueller took over as director of the FBI one week before the Sept. 11 attacks. After Mueller completed his 10-year term as FBI director, President Barack Obama reappointed him for a special two-year term, which required a special act of Congress.

Incoming UVA President Jim Ryan has been added to the Virginia Festival of the Book’s 2018 lineup. On Wednesday, the festival announced that Ryan, who will take the helm at the University over the summer, will speak about life’s important questions March 24 at Paramount Theater with his friend and marathon-running coach, Mark Lorenzoni.
A new psychological study has revealed the negative effect that smartphones can have on human interaction, finding that using the devices can actually cause us to enjoy our time with others less. Carried out by Kostadin Kushlev from the University of Virginia, along with researchers from the University of British Columbia, the team looked at the effect of smartphones on the dining experienced of 304 participants with an average age of 30.
Meanwhile, UVA where white supremacists marched with burning torches the night before the rally, hasn’t seen a drop in applications since August. Undergraduate applications to the University increased 1 percent from last year. UVA formed a working group looking at ways the University could have responded more effectively to the torch-lit march.
