Today we unveil the 2018 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings, identifying the university-based scholars in the U.S. who are doing the most to shape educational practice and policy. UVA’s Carol Ann Tomlinson ranks in the top 10.

Doleac, an assistant professor of public policy and economics) Jails and prisons provide some health treatment services, but what if we increased access to treatment in communities, so that people could get help before they get into trouble? New research shows that offering broad access to treatment for these problems is not only compassionate, but also a cost-effective way to reduce crime rates.
Virginia will be able to squeak funding for children’s health care and insurance through February, but experts and legislators are pleading for a permanent funding solution. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., visited the UVA Medical Center on Monday to talk with families that receive care covered by CHIP.
U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine toured the Children’s Hospital at UVA and met with parents who are worried about the failure of Congress to fund CHIP – a federal program that pays for children’s health care. He told them he’s confident lawmakers will come through.
Expanding the University of Virginia’s College at Wise: This was one of Northam’s signature proposals. Northam sees an expanded UVA-Wise as a bigger economic engine in the coalfields, and envisions graduate programs in renewable energy.
AI is probably coming for your job. At UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, we call these new experts “Knowledge Entrepreneurs.”

(Editorial) To his credit, Northam advanced some unique proposals to help build a new economy in rural Virginia. He proposed to expand UVA’s College at Wise — specifically adding graduate programs there with a focus on renewable energy. He proposed to waive certain taxes on startups in economically-distressed communities, which would cover rural Virginia and some central cities, too. He proposed to expand broadband internet.
Expanded outdoor tourism, health care and regional leadership development in Southwest Virginia are the goals of federal funding recommendations that Gov. Terry McAuliffe made Friday. A recommended $100,000 grant would go to Rally SWVA to create a new economic development emerging leadership program. Rally SWVA is a program of UVA’s College at Wise’s economic development office. The proposal would also get more than $17,500 from UVA-Wise and nearly $22,500 in “sponsorships.”
“I work with Elizabeth Warren,” proclaimed Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia at an event at UVA in November, pointing to an opioid bill the two worked on together that became law.
An athlete from a young age, Leland Melvin attended the University of Richmond on a football scholarship, and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He then completed a master’s degree in materials science engineering at UVA.
Guy Geier recently kicked off a year-long presidency of the AIA’s New York chapter. He said attending architecture school at UVA was “where I cultivated my design-thinking capabilities and was exposed to a wide range of academic and cultural subjects.”
The Virginia CubeSat Constellation is a NASA- and Virginia Space Grant Consortium-funded mission that will place three very small satellites in orbit as a constellation from the International Space Station as part of the NASA Undergraduate Student Instrument program. The student-led mission is a VSGC project and joint effort among four member universities: ODU, UVA, Virginia Tech and Hampton University.
Kyle Kondik, an American politics expert at the University of Virginia, said a Trump endorsement would help Jim Renacci in the GOP primary.
Republicans won’t be able to stifle Democrats as much as they did when they controlled two-thirds of the chamber, said Geoffrey Skelley, an analyst for the UVA Center for Politics.
The ranking by Sabato’s Crystal Ball, at UVA’s Center for Politics, also changed Monday with Royce’s announcement. It’s now seen as a “toss-up.” Previously, it was ranked as “likely Republican.”
Nonpartisan election handicapper Crystal Ball, which is led by Larry Sabato of UVA’s Center for Politics, revised the rating for California’s 39th Congressional District following Royce’s announcement. Instead of “leaning Republican,” the race is now a “toss-up,” according to Crystal Ball managing editor Kyle Kondik.
“I’ve told people that after Trump, I take everyone seriously,” said Larry Sabato, director of UVA’s Center of Politics.
“Inevitably, the looming election cuts into legislative time and makes many members cautious about passing big-ticket items,” said UVA political science professor Larry Sabato.
