A report by UVA’s Center for Politics last month suggested that if Democrats maintain at least a six-point advantage on this question, they would be predicted to win enough congressional races to take control of the House in 2019.
Wise County shares a border with Kentucky, and the University of Virginia has had a campus there since the 1950s. It’s grown rapidly in recent years, now with more than 2,000 students. The University of Virginia Foundation is working to move the proposed UVA indoor golf practice facility across from its approved location.
Siva Vaidhyanathan, a UVA professor of media studies and author of “Intellectual Property: A Very Short Introduction,” said copyright law does not protect recipes that are merely a list of ingredients. Intellectual protection in the food industry generally extends to trade secrets, such as the Coca-Cola formula; trademarks, such as Starbucks’s Frappuccino; or substantial creative elements of a published cookbook, such as illustrations or the text describing a dish.
Three University of Virginia rowers will compete at the World under-23 championships July 19-23 at the Plovdiv Regatta Venue in Bulgaria. Heidi Long and Ellie Stewart will compete for Great Britain and Morgan Rosts will compete for Canada.
Dr. Michael Kennedy, an associate professor at the University of Virginia, was relatively sure he knew the answer to this research question: “When making, purchasing and/or adoption decisions regarding a new technology-based product for your district or school, how important is the existence of peer-reviewed research to back the product?” Nevertheless, as part of the Edtech Research Efficacy Symposium held earlier this year, Kennedy created a research team and gathered the data. But, to his surprise, the results challenged conventional wisdom.
According to a poll released on July 17, more Americans want President Donald Trump impeached than those who wanted former President Richard Nixon impeached at the start of the Watergate scandal in 1973. Barbara Perry, a presidential studies director with the University of Virginia, explained that GOP Congressional representatives may dismiss some poll numbers because they do not accurately sample separate populations.
(Co-written by Edward L. Flippen, a lecturer in energy regulation and policy at the UVA School of Law) President Trump campaigned with a pledge to cancel the Paris Climate Accord and on June 1 announced that the U.S. would withdraw. The opportunity to develop new energy technology for markets with millions of potential customers exists regardless of whether the U.S. is an official party to the accord. But if the U.S. fails to focus on clean energy research and development, we could well miss this opportunity.

One of UVA’s top administrators has died. Phil A. Parrish, the university’s interim vice president for research, died July 12 of natural causes. Trained in materials science and engineering, Parrish was instrumental in establishing several of UVA’s cross-disciplinary research institutes, which bring together researchers from many fields to collaborate on one set of problems.
Taking control of Virginia’s legislature seems daunting. Democrats would have to sweep the districts Clinton won. “It’s possible, but 17 seats would be an unbelievable haul for them,” said Geoffrey Skelley, a political analyst at UVA’s Center for Politics.

Sabato also noted Flake is paying a price for his bipartisan work on issues such as comprehensive immigration reform, which Flake has championed for years. Such centrism angers the GOP's conservative base without earning any reward from Democrats, who are as eager as ever to defeat Flake at the polls, he said. "It's the old saying that the middle of the road is a six-inch yellow line where you get hit by both sides," Sabato said. "And that's where Flake is."
Nicole Hemmer, assistant professor at UVA’s Miller Center: I have been saving up John Farrell’s new Nixon biography so I can luxuriate in it over the summer. Nixon is a notoriously difficult character to capture, and Farrell does so in such a balanced, meticulous fashion – and in such compelling prose – that I’ve been slowly doling it out a chapter at a time. I’ll be pairing that with Peter Conradi’s book on the new cold war, “Who Lost Russia?”
