Dozens of women across the Central Virginia area used golf to celebrate the life of a local educator on Tuesday. Marty Whitlow taught kindergarteners Albemarle County for more than 30 years before being diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2009. “So many patients are diagnosed at late stage, so if we can find some of these in earlier stage or even a pre-cancerous stage, then we can make a huge impact on their overall outcome,” said Dr. Chip Landen of the UVA Cancer Center.
This will be Trump's fourth rally in Mississippi and his second in Jackson, his campaign said. The version of Kavanaugh now being cultivated from his past is that of a “frat boy” – a young man who relished in a culture of heavy drinking and where women were viewed as conquests. “The stakes here are not just about where we stand as a country in terms of a woman’s place in society, but also the future of Roe v Wade, the future of women’s autonomy over their reproductive lives,” said Jennifer Lawless, Commonwealth Professor of Politics at UVA.
"There is wide agreement that Sherrod Brown is well-positioned in the U.S. Senate race," said Kyle Kondik, a political analyst at UVA’s Center for Politics, which was a partner in the Ipsos Reuters poll. "He likely will lead the Democratic statewide ticket and national Republicans seem to be focusing on other races at this point. The big question is, can Brown pull [Democratic governor nominee Richard Cordray] and other statewide Democrats over the finish line? My guess is that if the governor's race is very close, the other statewides must be fairly close as well."
Republicans enjoy nearly total dominance of the Midwest. The GOP holds every governor's office in the region, save for Minnesota, as well as every legislature except Illinois. That looks likely to change soon. "The Midwest has arguably been the most competitive region in America for a very long time," says Kyle Kondik, an elections analyst at the University of Virginia. "It may be that the Midwest is swinging again."

A group of people who think Virginia's Eastern Shore would be a great spot to locate a four-year university is taking steps to make the dream a reality. The recently created nonprofit University of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Foundation is one step in that direction, according to Terry Malarkey, foundation president. "There are about two dozen colleges in small towns in Virginia. Then I happened upon the University of Virginia's College at Wise," Malarkey said.

Official Washington is full of impasses; we are truly fortunate when we have the means to avoid them in our personal lives. One of the many rewards of living in the Charlottesville area is a luncheon date with others who share a strong interest in things nuclear. We’ve been meeting one a month or so for eight years. We are a diverse bunch. There’s Houston Wood, born and raised in Mississippi, who is a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Virginia and a renowned expert on centrifuges. He expressed deep skepticism about the U.S. intelligence community’s complian...
