Area nonprofits can now apply for grants to support community health initiatives. The funding is being made available by a partnership between the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and the UVA Health System.
The review of Charlottesville’s nonprofit funding process is nearly complete, but a public comment on Monday night has altered the timeline. Before the City Council was scheduled to vote on its next steps, Walt Heinecke suggested that the city focus nonprofit funding in the priority areas identified by UVA President Jim Ryan’s University-Community Working Group: jobs and wages, affordable housing, health care, and education.
UVA kicked off its first-ever Presidential Ideas Festival Tuesday with insights into the executive office from former diplomats and dignitaries and an announcement of a new umbrella institute at UVA to promote democracy.

Democrats should try to find a decent candidate to run against Amash, as the district "definitely leans right but is sneakily competitive," said Kyle Kondik of UVA’s Center for Politics. Adding mental health services might improve a broad array of health outcomes for patients with HIV, according to a recent study from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Researchers compared how a subset of patients at UVA’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Clinic fared before and after the clinic expanded its mental health services in 2013. UVA nearly tripled the number of clinic patients receiving mental health care, from 385 in 2012 to 1,183 in 2014.
“Advantages beget advantages.” That’s the conclusion of a series of studies from researchers from Stanford University and the University of Virginia published Monday in the peer-reviewed Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Interpersonal Relations and Group Processes. “Individuals with relatively high social class are more overconfident,” they concluded. The cardiac Cavaliers struck again, as No. 3 seed Virginia rallied from five goals down to beat unseeded Maryland, 13-12, on Matt Moore’s goal with 3:15 left in overtime. Chris Long on Feb. 2 stood on The Fox Theatre Stage and delivered a message that transcended the physical feats he achieved in his 11-year NFL career. A Central Virginian whose jersey was retired by the University of Virginia is retiring after 11 years in the NFL. Chris Long, son of Hall-of-Famer Howie Long, announced Saturday night in a tweet that he's stepping off the football field.
