The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against using these high-tech baby monitors in healthy infants, said Dr. Rachel Moon, who chairs the academy's Task Force on SIDS. The academy’s main concern is that there's no evidence the devices even work, said Moon, head of pediatrics for the UVA School of Medicine.
Voting for round two of the Infiniti Coaches Charity Challenge is now underway and UVA men's basketball Coach Tony Bennett needs help to win for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
Donald Trump’s mournfully transparent attack on the press guarantees a short-term political gain. UVA political scientist Larry Sabato is not sure whether this is all a long-term strategy or a tactic designed to divert attention from self-generated controversies.
The anything-goes reaction on social media to Barron doing nothing more than attending the inaugural could be a sign of things to come in a social media universe dominated by Twitter, said Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at UVA’s Miller Center. “This is certainly the first incoming president with a pre-adolescent child in the Twitter age, not just the internet age,” said Ms. Perry.

Trump's attorney, Sheri Dillon, has argued that the emoluments clause does not apply to fair-value transactions, which would theoretically put Trump in the clear, as long as he wasn't accepting quid-pro-quo bribes or getting paid more than the market rate for goods and services rendered by the Trump Organization (a tough standard to actually enforce). Dillon's assessment isn't totally without support: Andy Grewal at the University of Iowa College of Law published a position paper just last week supporting that analysis, and University of Virginia School of Law's Saikrishna ...
"We're getting a snapshot of galaxy evolution in a phase that we haven't seen before," said study lead author Sabrina Stierwalt, an astrophysicist at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the University of Virginia. "My group found one of the clearest examples of evidence to back up this theory of how structure formed."
(By Dr. Michael D. Williams, surgeon and director of the UVA Center for Health Policy) As the White House changes hands, the “unknowns” far outnumber the “knowns” in discussions about federal health policy and the planned repeal of the Affordable Care Act. But even as repeal is discussed, a better way forward for U.S. health care is contained in the ACA.
The Affordable Care Act likely extended the lives of thousands of seniors who took advantage of free screening exams and were diagnosed with treatable, early-stage colorectal cancer, a new UVA study suggests.
A researcher says nurse practitioners are providing more in-home visits for the frail and elderly. However, the study also find regulations are hindering the growth of the profession in several states all while demand for the specialty climbs. UVA School of Medicine researcher Nengliang "Aaron" Yao conducted the study.
The Affordable Care Act has led, among its many other benefits, to increased diagnoses of early stage cancer in seniors. The study, from the University of Virginia, looked at colorectal cancer in U.S. seniors, from 2011-2013. It estimates that 8,400 early diagnoses were made that wouldn't have been made without ACA.
More than 70 bills had been filed that would directly or indirectly impact college campuses, including one that UVA President Teresa Sullivan said would allow “basically a date rape” drug. The bill by Del. Barry D. Knight, R-Virginia Beach, would increase from 101 to 151 the proof of neutral grain spirits or alcohol without a distinctive aroma, taste or color. The provisions of the bill would expire in 2022 after a five-year experimental period. “Please understand that’s basically an experiment on your students,” Sullivan told other public college presidents at a meeting of the State Council o...
Here’s the thing about UVA freshman basketball player Kyle Guy: He’s more than a man-bun.

Cancer screening has become more affordable for many Americans, thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Researchers have found that with ACA, diagnosis of the early stages of colorectal cancer among men from ages 65 and older has increased by as much as 8 percent. The study has been conducted by Nengliang "Aaron" Yao from the UVA’s School of Medicine, and Brett Lissenden, a UVA graduate economics student.
We’ve commented many times over the last year about the fiscal controversies at the University of Virginia. Ironically, it was not a lack of funds that created all the ruckus, but rather a surplus. Last year, it came to light that UVA had amassed a war chest of some $2 billion in extra money (aside from its $6 billion endowment). This past Tuesday, UVA’s board announced a new program that seemingly responds to the ongoing debate. As The Post noted, UVA “will open its gates a bit wider to in-state students ... and offer some middle-class families a new tuition break worth $2,000 a year.”
A $5 million gift from Joanne and Bill Conway will go towards supporting the University of Virginia’s fast-track-to-nursing program for non-nurses entering the profession.
"Reproducibility is a central feature of how science is supposed to be," says Brian Nosek, who spearheaded this research at the Center for Open Science. Nosek is also a UVA psychology professor. A few years ago, he organized a similar effort to examine research in his field. And his results garnered worldwide attention when two-thirds of the original findings in psychology couldn't be reproduced.
