Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System is opening a $7 million comprehensive breast care center Oct. 12. The 18,500-square-foot center includes 32 patient rooms. It will offer surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, genetics, plastic surgery and radiology services.
The first University of Virginia athletic event of the fall has been canceled. While it wasn’t slated to count in the regular-season standings, the UVa men’s soccer team’s Friday home exhibition with Clemson was canceled after the Tigers reported two positive COVID-19 cases within their program. This time a year ago, Dr. Cameron Webb of Charlottesville had no idea he would be among the top contenders this fall for election to the U.S. House of Representatives. The 37-year-old Democrat, a former White House Fellow and physician at the University of Virginia Health System who holds both a medical degree and a law degree, is running in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District centered in the Piedmont region.

Dozens of people joined a protest in front of the statue of George Rogers Clark on University of Virginia grounds Thursday night calling for the statue’s removal. The protest was organized by indigenous activists, who say the statue depicts and enforces a legacy of Native American persecution and white supremacy. This comes ahead of a UVA Board of Visitors meeting Friday in which they are expected to decide the fate of the statue.
