A majority of people living in central Virginia say they have a reliable internet connection, but many of them think providers are in short supply. Survey panel BeHeardCVA, in conjunction with the Weldon Cooper Center at the University of Virginia surveyed people in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Nelson, and Greene counties about their internet availability and usage. Nearly 90% of respondents rated their connection speeds at least acceptable.
Last summer, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine published a study that linked a buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries with the allergen in red meat, increasing risk of stroke and heart attacks. 
University of Virginia nephrologist and director of dialysis system Brendan Bowman, MD, has teamed up with engineers at the university to develop predictive techniques to improve medication dosing protocols. A nine-month pilot study found that the UVA dialysis system could improve the treatment of low red blood cell counts while reducing unnecessary usage of expensive medication by 25 percent. In turn, UVA Health System could save between $750,000 to $1 million annually by using predictive techniques.
BeHeardCVA participants are part of a standing pool of residents of Charlottesville or the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Nelson or Greene who have agreed to be contacted about surveys. The effort, led by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, aims to more easily and affordably conduct representative surveys.
Kalamazoo College will welcome Kenneth G. Elzinga, Ph.D. ’63 as its 2019 Commencement speaker on Sunday. Elzinga, the Robert C. Taylor Professor of Economics at the University of Virginia, is a renowned teacher and a leading authority on antitrust policy, writing for numerous journals, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Law and Economics, and the Harvard Law Review.
“DoD is saying we should uphold the rules we breached two weeks ago. But it’s not clear who breached it,” said Brad Carson, a former undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, and now a UVA professor of public policy. “If the people around the commander-in-chief were breaching the rule, it’s not a problem of rank-and-file.”
Sally Hudson has won the Democrats’ nomination for the 57th House of Delegates seat, defeating outgoing city councilwoman Kathy Galvin. The Iowa native is a 30-year-old member of the University of Virginia faculty and can now prepare to succeed fellow Democrat David Toscano in January.

There were some signs that the Democratic Party in the state is shifting to the left, especially in deep-blue Northern Virginia. Saslaw (D-Fairfax) faced his first challenger in 40 years in human rights attorney Yasmine Taeb. He won by only about 500 votes, according to preliminary results. Sometimes the applications are overt, as when scientific descriptions of how children learn offer new ideas for instructional methods. For example, researchers have described the learning benefits of spacing out practice, and some educators have sought to incorporate that finding into their classrooms.
Charlottesville area Walmart and Sam's Club stores are raising money for the UVA Children's Hospital. Now through July, customers at the Albemarle County locations can donate $1 or more toward the Children's Miracle Network.
Another factor that may influence the spread of breast cancer "is having a high level of [immune] cells called macrophages present within the tissue," explains Melanie Rutkowski of UVA’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology. She and her colleagues have recently conducted a study in mice that revealed another factor with a crucial role in breast cancer metastasis: gut bacteria.
Transgenerational bisphenol A exposure may contribute to autism, according to a mouse study published in the Endocrine Society's journal Endocrinology. "Exposure of mouse fetuses to BPA disrupts formation of nerve cell connections in the brain, and this is a transgenerational effect," said the study's senior author, Emilie F. Rissman of UVA’s School of Medicine and North Carolina State University.
Carl Zeithaml will step down from his position of dean of the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce in May. UVA announced his upcoming departure on Tuesday. He has been dean since 1997.
Universities offer grants and awards for students, faculty, and alumni, as well as resources that startups could otherwise only dream of. Next week, UVA’s Contemplative Sciences Center will host young leaders from nearly two dozen countries as part of the 2019 Dalai Lama Fellows Contemplative Leadership Assembly.
