The big idea is to turn the old Hyosung tire plant into a mixed-use development that’ll house new residential and retail space. A pair of UVA architecture graduate students put together plans to turn the old 150,000-square-foot plant into a mixed-use housing and retail space.
History has proved time and time again that many family-owned businesses don’t survive being transferred from one generation to the next. A new report written in partnership with UVA’s Darden School of Business provides advice on cultivating human capital, financial capital and innovation across generations.
Acknowledging the roots of racism was a focal point of keynote speaker James Forman Jr. at a UVA-hosted event Thursday. Forman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Yale law professor, spoke to a crowd of hundreds at the Paramount Theater as a part of a UVA Law conference.
A crowd came out to the University of Virginia to learn about the expansion of Medicaid in Virginia and how that’ll affect people.
"The Kavanaugh accusations have put Republican men running for office in a tough spot. They’re now asked by every news outlet how they’ll vote, and this will be a clear litmus test on where they stand with respect for women," said Jen Lawless, a UVA professor of politics.
According to research conducted by psychologists from Harvard and UVA, people consider themselves to be almost entirely different from who they were 10 years ago, yet don’t think they’ll be too different in 10 years’ time.

With #MeToo firing up millions of women against sexual abuse by male bosses and President Donald Trump routinely weighing in on the side of the accused, America faces an all-out war of the sexes ahead of November elections. Larry Sabato, director of UVA’s Center for Politics, said women "already were disproportionately choosing the Democratic ticket." And Trump's position "can't possibly help Republicans to make up any ground."
(Commentary) Earlier this week, I attended the annual Charlottesville Business Diversity Council Luncheon and wrote about Carla Williams’ keynote remarks. Williams is the newish athletic director at the University of Virginia and, in case you missed it, she’s the first and only African-American woman leading a major university’s athletics department. The day after the story went live, I got an email from a reader who expressed no animosity, racism or bias, but said he was nonetheless “sick to death of the emphasis and mania about diversity in this era.” He continued, “Why can’t we accept the f...

Dozens of women across the Central Virginia area used golf to celebrate the life of a local educator on Tuesday. Marty Whitlow taught kindergarteners Albemarle County for more than 30 years before being diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2009. “So many patients are diagnosed at late stage, so if we can find some of these in earlier stage or even a pre-cancerous stage, then we can make a huge impact on their overall outcome,” said Dr. Chip Landen of the UVA Cancer Center.
This will be Trump's fourth rally in Mississippi and his second in Jackson, his campaign said. Kyle Kondik, who analyzes elections at UVA’s Center for Politics, said Trump "loves to go into places that love him,” noting Trump’s recent visit to Montana. “He generally holds these rallies in states that he’s won.”
The version of Kavanaugh now being cultivated from his past is that of a “frat boy” – a young man who relished in a culture of heavy drinking and where women were viewed as conquests. “The stakes here are not just about where we stand as a country in terms of a woman’s place in society, but also the future of Roe v Wade, the future of women’s autonomy over their reproductive lives,” said Jennifer Lawless, Commonwealth Professor of Politics at UVA.
"There is wide agreement that Sherrod Brown is well-positioned in the U.S. Senate race," said Kyle Kondik, a political analyst at UVA’s Center for Politics, which was a partner in the Ipsos Reuters poll. "He likely will lead the Democratic statewide ticket and national Republicans seem to be focusing on other races at this point. The big question is, can Brown pull [Democratic governor nominee Richard Cordray] and other statewide Democrats over the finish line? My guess is that if the governor's race is very close, the other statewides must be fairly close as well."
Republicans enjoy nearly total dominance of the Midwest. The GOP holds every governor's office in the region, save for Minnesota, as well as every legislature except Illinois. That looks likely to change soon. "The Midwest has arguably been the most competitive region in America for a very long time," says Kyle Kondik, an elections analyst at the University of Virginia. "It may be that the Midwest is swinging again."
