The largest-ever genetic study on human cognition has found more than 1,000 links between people’s genes and how far they get in school. “This paper will [be] a landmark in this new kind of social science,” says UVA psychologist Eric Turkheimer, who was not involved in the study. “As a very successful application of new genetic technology, it is extraordinary.”

Immunoglobulin E to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose increased atheroma burden and plaques, particularly in patients aged 65 years or younger, according to a study published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. “This novel finding from a small group of subjects from Virginia raises the intriguing possibility that allergy to red meat may be an underrecognized factor in heart disease,” Dr. Coleen McNamara, professor of medicine in the Cardiovascular Research Center of the UVA Health System, said in a press release.
