Virginia suffered a surprising home loss to unranked Virginia Tech on Saturday, ending its winning streak at 16 games. One recent defeat was not enough to sway the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee. The Cavaliers are still viewed as the best in the country a month before Selection Sunday. Virginia was the top overall seed in preliminary NCAA tournament rankings released Sunday.
It isn’t easy to fool Sarah Jane Freeman. The UVA junior has made the Dean’s List every semester in her first 2½ years of college. She’s also studied at the Sorbonne in France and the London School of Economics. Pity the parents, then, who devised an elaborate ruse to surprise her with the news that she has been chosen to reign as Queen of Carnival 2018.

Some Mormons say the Porter scandal raises serious concerns about whether the church's patriarchal culture and the belief that marriage is sacred and eternal -- a cornerstone of Mormon theology -- may prevent some spouses from leaving bad marriages. "I see this as an extension of the #MeToo movement," said Kathleen Flake, a UVA professor of Mormon studies. "It is almost inevitable that this will cause the Mormon church to examine their existing guidance to local church leaders."
“[Corporations] are very frustrated with what they’re getting from our educational institutions,” said Philip Zelikow, a UVA professor who collaborated with corporate leaders like Howard Schultz of Starbucks on a 2015 report titled “America’s Moment: Creating Opportunity in the Connected Age.” “The American labor market is dysfunctional and broke.”
Only one Senate incumbent from those five states had taken to the airwaves through early February: Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, viewed as 2018’s most vulnerable Republican. Heller, the only sitting Republican on the ballot from a state won by Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016, faces a primary challenge from Danny Tarkanian, a perennial candidate who has aligned himself closely with President Trump in this race. Given the high stakes of the midterms, “you are going to see the airwaves in certain states totally flooded with ads,” said Kyle Kondik, who analyzes elections at UVA’s Center for Politics.
(Commentary by Michael Nelson, senior fellow at UVA’s Miller Center) It’s one thing not to understand the challenges of a new position because of lack of experience. It’s another not to learn. Every one of Trump’s elected predecessors became more surefooted in the job by doing it. They got better because they crammed during the post-election transition period, surrounded themselves with advisors experienced in government, and learned from their mistakes. In contrast, Trump took office avowing that he had nothing to learn.
Five years ago, select schools in West Virginia’s GEAR UP program, or “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs,” participated in a national text message initiative to get high school seniors more prepared for college. A UVA study found that high school seniors in West Virginia who received these text reminders were almost 7 percent more likely to persist through their first-year of college. But among students from rural areas, that number jumps to 8 percent. Why?
The local Evidence-Based Decision Making Policy Team was founded in 2010 as part of a federal initiative to bring more data-driven policy to the criminal justice system. The EBDM team partnered with UVA’s Department of Systems and Information Engineering to design the study.
The ability of cancer cells to develop resistance to chemotherapy drugs, known as multidrug resistance, remains a major cause of tumor recurrence and cancer metastasis. A team including UVA researchers has made a major breakthrough in the fight against multiresistant cells with a technique using nanoparticles to administer drugs to cancer cells.

For amateur athletes, having some flexibility is important for healthy living, said Jay Hertel, a UVA kinesiologist and professor of sports medicine. “You need to be able to go through a functional range of motion from the standpoint of being able to do activities of daily living.” But too much of it isn’t a good thing.
Not even Mother Nature could keep a thunderous UVA student section away. "It's a little rain, but we're not letting that stop us," fourth-year student Sean Crow said, who started camping out at John Paul Jones Arena on Thursday. "But I'd say it's the best one so far."

In a show of support, Becket, a law firm that defends religious liberty, and UVA law professor Douglas Laycock filed a friend-of-the-court brief in favor of Blaine Anderson, the owner of Hands On Originals.
On Dec. 22, Trump signed into law a major tax reform package that will lower income tax rates for many Americans. On Jan. 22, he signed a temporary spending bill to end a three-day government shutdown that was at least partially blamed on congressional Democrats. And on Jan. 30, while the Iowa Poll was in the field, Trump appeared on primetime television to deliver his first State of the Union address. The upswing coincides with a national rise in Trump’s approval rating, likely driven by those developments as well as fewer than average “self-inflicted controversies” in recent weeks, said...
Charlottesville officials are continuing their efforts to manage downtown parking despite a decision by the City Council in early January to terminate a parking meter program before its six-month pilot program ended. “There is an existing plan that has certain recommendations in place that included the on-street meters, but are much more than that,” said Andrew Mondschein, a UVA School of Architecture professor and member of the PLACE Design Task Force.
Roger Dean Huffstetler, who is both outraising and outspending his Democratic opponents in Virginia's largely rural fifth district, announced his campaign less than a year after he moved in the summer of 2016 to Charlottesville, a blue city located near the center of a rural red district. Geoffrey Skelley, an expert on Virginia elections for UVA’s Center for Politics, said Huffstetler's lack of local ties could hurt his chances to win the Democratic nomination, which will this year be decided by a convention and not a primary. "Having strong local ties could be vital in the nomination process,...
