Breast cancer patients who take opioid painkillers are more likely to discontinue an important hormone treatment that helps ensure their survival, researchers report. "It's not a big secret that the U.S. uses more opioids than any other country in the world," said researcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the UVA School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences. "Clearly there has to be better management of opioids in the elderly cancer population."

When it comes to the first President, watch out for quotations that are a little too colloquial. “An army of jackasses led by a lion is stronger than an army of lions led by a jackass” is a quote that often gets misattributed to George Washington. "If you see something profane or flippant, it’s highly unlikely he said it," says William Ferraro, managing editor and acting editor-in-chief of The Papers of George Washington at the University of Virginia. "He was very conscious about the fact that he wasn’t college-educated or formally or classically trained, so he took great pains through his rea...
"Adding North Korea and Venezuela provides some cover. It makes it look less like it was just aimed at Muslims," Douglas Laycock, a law professor specializing in religion at the UVA Law School, said. But because of the small numbers affected, he said, "the cover is looking very thin."
Besides President Trump, health care, education and law and order, there are still plenty of key issues that could sway Virginia voters one way or the other. A newly discovered dwarf galaxy with a limited oxygen supply may offer astronomers new insights in the formation and evolution of the early universe. "We found that a considerable fraction of the stellar mass of the galaxy was formed only a few million years ago, making this one of the best counterparts we've found of primordial galaxies," Trinh Thuan, an astronomer at the University of Virginia, said in a news release. "Because of its extremely low oxygen level, this galaxy serves as an accessible proxy for star-forming galaxies that came together within one to two billion years after the Big...
Discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the star-forming dwarf galaxy J0811+4730 has 9 percent less oxygen than any other so far discovered. “We found that a considerable fraction of the stellar mass of J0811+4730 was formed only a few million years ago, making this one of the best counterparts we’ve found of primordial galaxies,” said UVA professor Trinh Thuan.
Would a Roy Moore victory mean trouble for other Senate incumbents? Maybe, but these circumstances may not be easily replicated: Roy Moore is much better known than a lot of Senate primary challengers, and the runoff law helps him a lot. “There are those who think that the potential success of Moore’s candidacy could be a jumping off point for insurgent challengers to sitting GOP senators in 2018,” said Geoffrey Skelley, associated editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball, which is produced at the UVA Center for Politics.
