(By Siva Vaidhyanathan, Robertson Professor of Media Studies and director of UVA’s Center for Media and Citizenship) Chuck Berry was an American. He declared his Americanness loudly and fought to assert his standing as a citizen and a man, even though too many others would deny that of him. If I could feel what he sang about, I could be an American, too.
Feinstein made mention of the “unprecedented treatment” of Merrick Garland, who was former President Obama’s nominee for Scalia’s seat. Garland was seen as a moderate candidate, chosen because he would not ruffle feathers on either side of the political aisle. However, he was denied even a hearing. Dr. Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at UVA’s Miller Center and a former judicial fellow at the U.S. Supreme Court, said that no person with “a nomination has been denied a hearing, since hearings have been in place” in the 20th century.

There is no easy explanation. Part is the randomness of sport. One day you’re striping it down the middle, the next you can’t find the fairway with a GPS and a guide dog. Part is the opponent. Florida, Miami, Duke and North Carolina have the size and skill to disrupt perimeter shooters. But there’s more to this, as Virginia coach Tony Bennett and his staff well know.
