The University of Virginia Cavaliers are now the second-ranked college basketball team in the country. A Saturday road win over then #13-ranked Notre Dame, coupled with a Sunday road loss by then #2-Duke helped propel undefeated UVa. into the number two position. Virginia and #1-ranked University of Kentucky are the only unbeaten teams left in college basketball.
The state appears to be on track to meet its goal for increasing the number of Virginians with college degrees, but higher education officials say vigilance is necessary, because key indicators are showing signs of stress. Total enrollment dropped at Virginia’s pubic institutions this academic year, and while the head count climbed for private schools, both sectors have seen a slowing in the rate they are awarding degrees, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia was told on Monday. Only four institutions saw declines in in-state awards: Virginia State University by 87; Univers...
(By Edward Klees, U.Va. law lecturer) “Plastics!” So was the career advice famously urged upon Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) by Mr. Robinson in The Graduate. We’ve been hearing last rites for the legal profession, particularly of the precipitous decline in law school enrollment. But I say there’s still a beating heart in the profession. And so I offer my Mr. Robinson advice: “Law!” Or more specifically, “Investment law!”
Farmland preservation grants totaling nearly $1.6 million have been awarded to six Virginia localities. According to a 2013 economic impact study conducted by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, agriculture and forestry are two of Virginia's largest private industries with a combined economic impact of $70 billion annually.
A police investigation has cleared a University of Virginia fraternity of any involvement in an alleged gang rape that was detailed in a Rolling Stone magazine story last year, with authorities saying there was “no basis to believe that an incident occurred” at the Phi Kappa Psi house.
Police said Monday that they’ve been unable to confirm that an alleged gang rape occurred at a University of Virginia fraternity house as described in a Rolling Stone article, and the school announced that it reinstated the group and its activities. U.Va. said in a statement that the decision to reinstate Phi Kappa Psi was made after consulting with the Charlottesville Police Department. The Rolling Stone article described in graphic detail an alleged gang rape of a student at the Phi Kappa Psi house in 2012.
(Video) The University of Virginia has announced that it is reinstating the fraternity at the center of a gang-rape allegation reported in Rolling Stone after police said there was no evidence supporting the claim.
Students at the University of Virginia are back for the first day of classes after break. Their last semester ended with controversy after allegations of a fraternity gang rape came out in Rolling Stone magazine. Professor Ricardo Padron is hoping the long winter break helped the university heal. "We can't keep up that level of emotional intensity. A lot of anger, a lot of tension, a lot of anxiety," he said. “So far the atmosphere seems like the start of a normal semester Some students say the dark, dreary weather isn't stopping them from staying positive about ac...
The alleged gang rape of a student at the University of Virginia never happened, according to police in Charlottesville. Still, it's influencing local politicians to propose bills on how to handle campus sexual assaults. Springfield delegate Eileen Filler-Corn is sponsoring a bill that aims to protect victims of sexual assault on college campuses and would also lay out a clear plan for reporting crimes. The bill calls for campus police to report sexual assaults to their local commonwealth's attorney within 48 hours after an investigation begins.
With the population explosion in the South and West expected to continue, while aging infrastructure requires a massive overhaul elsewhere, the Obama administration on Monday began to map out a 30-year framework to meet those needs. “Our point is to say that if we don’t address these things, is there a cost? The answer is yes,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in an interview Friday. Foxx said the report being drafted by the U.S. Department of Transportation draws in part on data that has been compiled in recent years by such groups as the Miller Center at the ...
The University of Virginia's School of Architecture is working on plans to expand the university area down Ivy Road. While this student project is just in theory, they're hoping some of their ideas may some day become reality. Three hundred UVA students walked Ivy Rd. on Sunday and Monday, studying the layout and getting inspired.
Reflecting national trends, total enrollment at Virginia’s public colleges and universities dropped this academic year in the first year-to-year decline since 1994. The public schools with enrollment drops were Virginia Commonwealth, George Mason, Christopher Newport, Norfolk State, Radford, the University of Mary Washington, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and Virginia State University.
(By Michael Menaker, a professor of biology at the University of Virginia) Mars has been in the news a lot lately. Just recently, studies have shown that the red planet “belches” methane, harbors organic molecules and once was warmer and wetter than previously believed — all possible indicators of past, and maybe even present, simple life there.
(By Robert C. Pianta, Dean & professor at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education)Last month, the U.S. Department of Education finally released a framework for its college ratings system, its effort to hold higher education institutions accountable for outcomes -- graduation rates, employment opportunities, maybe graduates' personal income. We are educators, higher education administrators, and parents. We see firsthand the potential of higher education as a uniquely valuable experience to promote learning and development. We are also advocates for outcome-based acco...
(By Gerald L. Baliles, the 65th governor of Virginia and former director and CEO of U.Va.’s Miller) The end of December marked the end of my time as director of the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, and I want to express my gratitude to Burkett Miller, a Chattanooga business leader and philanthropist, 1914 graduate of U.Va. Law School and a moving force in the founding of the Miller Center. His vision led to the establishment of this remarkable place that studies, as no one else can, the American presidency, political history and public-policy issues important to the governan...
Currently, half the world’s population lives in cities, a number expected to top 60 per cent by 2050. Creating cities with healthy green spaces could presumably improve citizens’ health and lower health care costs. Some researchers are attempting to define those more completely. Dr. Timothy Beatley is a Professor of Sustainable Communities in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning at the University of Virginia. He’s part of the Biophilic Cities Project, based at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture. Beatley says a biophilic city &ld...
Thomas Skalak was named executive director of science and technology programs at the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation in Seattle. Skalak will lead a team that will explore life sciences and make strategic investments with global impact. Skalak had been at the University of Virginia for 28 years, serving as vice president for research for the past seven years. He also was named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.
Fat can indeed act as a shock absorber in violent collisions. A 2003 study of car-crash victims found that those with more subcutaneous fat were less likely to suffer abdominal injuries. But the fat-as-airbag principle only goes so far. When a driver is flung forward, the heavier his or her body, the greater the force required to stop it. “Changing demographics create challenges to seat-belt fit,” says Richard Kent of the University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics. Restraints have long been designed using crash-test dummies, whose size—about 168 lbs. and 5’7...
E-signatures are considered to be less convincing and trustworthy than traditional hand signatures, scientists say. Eileen Chou, an assistant professor at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia, conducted a series of controlled laboratory experiments to establish a causal relationship between how a document is signed and people's reactions to the document. People trusted the value of e-signatures significantly less than that of traditional hand signatures, citing as their main reason the sense that e-signers were less involved and committed. In othe...
Although Charlottesville is an ocean away from France, several expatriates and central Virginia residents gathered Saturday afternoon in silent solidarity to honor the victims of last week’s terrorist attacks on the Parisian satirical publication Charlie Hebdo. About 20 University of Virginia students found themselves close to last week’s attacks, said Ari Blatt, a French professor and program director of one of the school’s January term courses. The group safely returned from France on Saturday. “In France, this really hurts, and the French are not new to terrorist att...
