(Commentary by Kyle Kondik, political analyst at UVA’s Center for Politics) One might have done better in predicting the 2016 presidential election, or at least in anticipating the very close eventual outcome, by basing a projection of the national popular vote on the findings of several political science models released prior to the election. The former CEO of Massey Energy served a one-year sentence, ending in May 2017, for conspiring to violate mine health and safety standards in connection with the nation’s deadliest coal mining explosion in decades. “Maybe I’m wrong, but I still think a conviction for murder would prevent someone’s election,” said Larry Sabato, director of UVA’s Center for Politics.
Boards owe it to the employees of their organizations to engage their corporate compliance and HR committees in a review and refresh of sexual harassment policies and investigative procedures, as well as diversity and inclusion programs. "A board ought to look at itself on an ongoing basis," said R. Edward Howell, a UVA professor of public health sciences. "When an executive is dismissed, that's a very appropriate time [for a board] to look at itself and ask, 'How are we doing? How are we setting the tone? In Iraq, Facebook is not just an adjunct to online life, it is online life. Up until recently, when YouTube started to compete, Facebook had a monopoly on Iraqi social media. But as a business, Facebook obviously has an agenda that is about more than just connecting people. We’ve seen that in other parts of the country, and we’re seeing it in this Virginia race, too.”
