Adding a measurement of breast density could help clinicians to better predict a woman's risk for breast cancer, according to a new US study. Dr Jennifer Harvey, professor of radiology at the University of Virginia school of medicine, said: "There is increasing interest in implementing personalised breast cancer screening strategies instead of guidelines based on a woman's age. However, most risk models do not include breast density."
A 2003 paper from the Quarterly Journal of Economics and Finance found that being Cuban was the single most important factor in the price and rating of a cigar. The researchers from University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business Administration reviewed Cigar Aficionado’s blind taste test ratings and price data for 689 cigars and found that on average Cuban cigars were rated about four points higher on a 100-point scale. Other qualities such as whether the cigar was well-built or had certain flavor profiles had less impact on the rating.

(By Jack Hamilton, assistant professor of American studies and media studies at the University of Virginia)On Monday morning, for the first time since Bill Clinton was president the world awoke to find a new D’Angelo album in it. The album is called Black Messiah, a title that contains traces of Robert Christgau’s famous description of D’Angelo back in 2000 as “R&B Jesus,” which would make Dec. 15, 2014 something like R&B Easter, just in time for the first night of R&B Hanukkah.
Extra pipes attracted better plumbers — the more the finance industry grew, the more it tugged at highly educated workers. Thomas Philippon is a French economist at NYU’s Stern School of Business. He and a co-author, Ariell Reshef of the University of Virginia, have shown that from the end of World War II until the early 1980s, finance was just like any other desk job: The average Wall Street worker was paid about as much as the average worker in the private sector and was only slightly more educated.
If or when Jeb Bush enters the Republican primary presidential race, he will face a much deeper political bench than in 2012, when former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney was seen by many as the only responsible choice for the party. "I think a big problem for Jeb Bush will be some of the Tea Party base is just going to find his candidacy to be anathema," said political analyst Geoffrey Skelley, who is associate editor at Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor, said Tuesday he has decided to “actively explore” running for president — the strongest indication he’s made to date about a potential 2016 campaign. It wasn’t an outright declaration by Bush. But it sure sounds like he’s inching closer to a run. As recently as Monday, one of Romney’s former advisers said he believes the former Massachusetts governor wouldn’t jump into the race if Bush declares himself a candidate. Jeb Bush's potential to be the GOP nominee will depend in part on whether the party's establishment wing can convince more conservative activists that the party's nominee must be able to reach new constituencies, not just speak to its base. Bush has to be considered a front-runner for the nomination immediately, says Kyle Kondik of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. "History tells us to bet on the establishment candidate."
Executive orders are numbered — the most recent, Executive Order 13683, modified three previous executive orders. Memoranda are not numbered, not indexed and, until recently, difficult to quantify. Kenneth Lowande, a political science doctoral student at the University of Virginia, counted up memoranda published in the Code of Federal Regulations since 1945. In an article published in the December issue of Presidential Studies Quarterly, he found that memoranda appear to be replacing executive orders.

Rolling Stone’s story about sexual assault at the University of Virginia may have come into substantial question in recent weeks. But the piece, along with others about rape on college campuses, has helped revive a conversation about what it’s useful to tell students about drinking. “It’s a surprisingly loaded subject, given the widely acknowledged prevalence of drinking on American campuses.” wrote Emily Yoffe in a recent piece on sexual assault on college campuses, in which she described how a speaking invitation was rescinded after she wrote a piece u...
