After leading the Virginia men’s basketball team to its first national championship in program history, head coach Tony Bennett turned down a raise, the school announced Monday morning. Bennett also pledged $500,000 to a career development program for current and former UVA players.
Maddie Rennyson and Mary Blankemeier, third-year University of Virginia students, are helping some Charlottesville youth find their footing on the track.
“The approaches we’ve taken to take these strategies to scale haven’t worked,” said Ben Castleman, an associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Virginia. He directs the Nudge4 Solutions Lab at UVa, which uses tools honed by behavioral economics and social psychology to try to improve college and employment outcomes.

The India Student Association (ISA) at the University of Virginia recently held its second zero-waste event in an effort to promote a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle among its students, reports The Cavalier Daily. More than 250 people attending the event, using only compostable or recyclable materials to consume their dinner.
The University of Virginia has recently begun urging students to stop singing allegedly homophobic lyrics to the school’s fight song, “The Good Old Song.” The school is also urging students to stop using vulgarities when slamming their collegiate football rivals.
“Even though the rates for cervical cancer mortality have been declining over the last 50, 60 years, there’s still sort of a hot spot of excess cervical cancer mortality in Appalachia,” said Roger Anderson, professor of public health sciences at the University of Virginia. Anderson is leading a team of researchers at UVA who are part of an $11 million National Institutes of Health multi-year, multi-state effort to reverse this trend in Central Appalachia.
