Jennifer Lawless, a UVA politics professor, said the 2020 election will not be about "one woman versus the male presidency we’ve always had." Instead, "It’s going to allow for a really serious conversation about the extent to which Americans are sexist."
Even though the votes may be there to overturn the Arizona case, some think the court may not want that fight. But it’s risky for the justices to overturn such a new precedent. It makes it look like the meaning of the Constitution depends solely on the membership of the court, Saikrishna Prakash, a constitutional scholar at the UVA School of Law said.
“I shall not be returning home quite yet,” Capt. Andrew Luck noted last weekend, soon after the Indianapolis Colts claimed an unlikely playoff spot with a victory over the Tennessee Titans in the final game of the NFL’s regular season. “Our unit was victorious in the hard fought, rain-soaked battle. … Jubilation.” The parody account, which has been active for several years, works so well because of its authenticity, its earnest embrace of Civil War nostalgia. “It rings true and the language sounds like it’s from the 19th century,” said Caroline Janney, a history professor at the University of ...

(Commentary by Bernie Carlson, Vaughan Professor of Humanities and chair of UVA’s Engineering & Society Department) In October, the New York Times reported that the Australian mining tycoon, Clive Palmer, was pressing ahead with his plans to build a replica of the RMS Titanic for his Blue Star Line. Would sailing on the Titanic II be a happy dream or an ugly nightmare?
On March 16, 2018, the nation watched, stunned, as UVA’s De’Andre Hunter, his right arm wrapped around Kyle Guy’s shoulders, escorted his teammate off the court post-defeat; Guy’s face buried in his jersey, blocking out the cameramen, the fans – the entire world.

This award recognizes programs that are committed to high quality patient care.
Ms. Pelosi knows that this speakership will be defined by how she handles President Trump. The last time she was speaker, from 2007 to 2011, legislative accomplishments made her reputation. She muscled through bills that bailed out Wall Street and helped arrest an economic free-fall, allowed gays to serve in the military, overhauled the nation’s banking laws and expanded access to health care for an estimated 17 million people. Many say passage of the Affordable Care Act is her signature achievement. But divided government, an unpopular president and wide-ranging, possibly criminal investigati...
Estonia has launched a project to make government administration completely digital. The goal is to reduce the size of the government work force, open up the decision-making process and fuel economic growth. Other countries have a lot to learn, says Siva Vaidhyanathan. He is director of the Center for Media and Citizenship at the University of Virginia. Estonia took time to build security and privacy into its online model. “It made sure that state accountability is part of the process,” Vaidhyanathan said.
(Audio) New Yorkers just got some good news about the city's streets: Fewer people died in traffic accidents in the city last year. Marketplace’s Erika Beras reports on what the city has done to bring traffic related deaths down and what’s next. Listen to hear Peter Norton from the University of Virginia.

NASA’s New Horizons team unveiled a striking set of images of Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69, beamed back to Earth after the spacecraft’s historic flyby on New Year’s Day. “Those moments when you see an image for the first time. When she is sworn in on Thursday, Ms. Omar will take her place in the history books as one of the first two Muslim women in Congress — and the first to wear a hijab, or head covering, on the House floor. “She’s the epitome of the so-called American dream, but for much of white Christian America, she’s an American nightmare,” said Larycia Hawkins, who teaches politics and religion at the University of Virginia, and lost her job at an evangelical college after wearing a hijab in solidarity with Muslim women.

Warren will have plenty of competition from women driving the Democratic Party's resurgence as well as liberals and progressives, UVA professor Larry Sabato said. He said that despite her 80 percent name recognition, that did not necessarily translate into actual support. "Some Democrats swear by her and love her blunt style, while others are put off by her and fear she'd lose to Trump. Warren has a lot of convincing to do," Sabato said, adding the same is true of many other Democratic contenders.
This year, we asked a number of writers, technologists, politicians, activists and comedians to answer two questions: What do you predict Mark Zuckerberg’s 2019 personal challenge will be?
