American Kristine O’Brien advanced with the United States to the final of the women’s eights at the Sea Forest Waterway on Saturday, the first full day of competition at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. The U.S. won its preliminary heat in a time of 6:08.69 and is now in position to win its fourth consecutive gold medal. O’Brien, a 2013 graduate from the University of Virginia, is competing in her first Olympics.
Slovenia played its first-ever Olympic basketball game against Argentina early Monday morning, and Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic ran wild to guide his country to an exhilarating 118-100 victory. While Doncic was the maestro behind Slovenia's success, University of Virginia product Mike Tobey put together an admirable performance of his own. Tobey, 26, led the team with 14 rebounds and finished with 11 points while making 63% of his buckets.
Paige Madden finished 3rd in her heat and had the seventh-fastest time to advance to 400-meter Freestyle Final in Tokyo. She placed seventh in the final 400-meter freestyle Sunday night. Madden recently led the University of Virginia to the NCAA championship, winning three individual NCAA titles.

Over the course of five weeks at the Freedom School, nearly 60 students from third through eighth grade researched the juvenile justice system, took virtual field trips and worked on oral histories about someone who faced an injustice. From after World War II up until the early ‘70s, the United States had what was commonly considered consensus budgeting, according to Craig Volden, a professor of public policy and politics at the University of Virginia. “The president, the appropriations committee, folks in Congress and so on had pretty much a common view about what they wanted to do with the budget,” Volden explained. Volden noted that they thought spending should be addressed to the greatest public needs, taxes shouldn’t get the public too upset, and that the budget should be balanced in the long term.
A University of Virginia lecturer is missing after her wrecked car was found in a park, authorities said. Julia Christine Devlin, 55, who works in the college’s economics department, was last seen on security footage in her white Lexus sedan entering Shenandoah National Park in Charlottesville on July 14, park officials said. Three days later, the smashed sedan was discovered off Skyline Drive in the park – with Devlin nowhere to be found, officials said.
