The expansion is already having an effect on local health care providers. The program manager of the University of Virginia Medicaid unit says the UVA Medical Center has approved the hiring of several people to handle the increased number of Medicaid patients.
Public institutions say they are trying to help students within their states who struggle paying for college — and even those with moderate incomes. The University of Virginia just announced it will waive tuition for in-state students whose families earn less than about $80,000 annually while students from families earning less than $30,000 annually would be eligible for free tuition and room and board.

On Nov. 1, people can apply for expanded Medicaid in Virginia. The UVA Health System has set up locations in the medical complex to help people with the application process, to answer questions, and to connect people to the services they need.

According to a City of Charlottesville memo, 2,100 adults in city limits will be newly eligible for Medicaid; the city’s social services department is partnering with the UVA Medical Center, Region Ten Community Service Board, United Way, the Free Clinic and others to spread the word about expansion, new income limit requirements and encouraging people who may have been denied coverage in the past to reapply.

A printmaker from Detroit has been selected as the Virginia Center of the Book's first Frank Riccio Artist-in-Residency. Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. will be in Charlottesville beginning Nov. 14 to begin work on a collaborative art project he will be undertaking with the community in the city, Albemarle County and the University of Virginia next year.
