(Commentary by Steven M. Gillon, senior faculty fellow at UVA’s Miller Center of Public Affairs) On June 8, 1968, a 21-car train carried the body of slain presidential candidate and New York Sen. UVA researchers believe they have found a lead to treat the most common form of muscular dystrophy. The muscle disease is known as myotonic dystrophy.
A new metric for assessing cardiac health, called pulmonary artery proportional pulse pressure, or PAPP, could help to identify people at high risk of hospitalization or death due to pulmonary hypertension or heart failure, allowing for more timely and effective treatment, a study reported. UVA researchers who developed PAPP called it a “simple measure” that could be useful in identifying at-risk patients, so doctors might “tailor more aggressive treatments” for them, such as a heart monitor implant.
30th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Jeff Hamilton asked the workgroup to consider expansion of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise by 4,000 students as part of a larger effort to encourage state agencies to move to Southwest Virginia. Hamilton said large corporations and their workers would not see Southwest Virginia as a preferable place to work and live. “If they don’t want to work here, we can hire people here,” Hamilton said, adding that state agencies in Richmond could free up office space for those large corporations by moving operations to Southwest Virginia.

A new national study casts significant doubt on the idea that states, at least, are better positioned to run schools than locally elected officials. Overall, researchers found little evidence that districts see test scores rise as a result of being taken over. If anything, state control had slightly negative effects on students. “Maybe school boards are the least worst option that we have,” said Beth Schueler, a professor at the University of Virginia and one of the study authors.
(Commentary by Elizabeth Ellcessor, associate professor of media studies) COVID-19-related messages are a new use of the alert system. They indicate changing ideas about what constitutes an emergency and underscore the challenges of public messaging in a personalized media environment.
(Editorial) We need the Karsh Institute. We needed it five, 10, 15 years ago. We need it now more than ever. The Karsh Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia will be an expansion of the Karsh Center for Law and Democracy at the UVA Law School.

None of his stories resembled what transpired Tuesday in Columbia, South Carolina, where Devin Ortiz, Stephen Schoch, Kyle Teel and friends created their own program lore with another regional title.
Voters will be selecting the Democratic nominees for the offices of governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general on Tuesday. J. Miles Coleman at the University of Virginia Center for Politics says that former Governor Terry McAuliffe is a strong favorite to win the nomination for governor. Incumbent Attorney General Mark Herring is also the favorite to win the nomination in his run for re-election. However, the race for the lieutenant governor's office is the one that is the most up in the aid.
"If the Republicans can manage to recapture Virginia, which has clearly moved in a Democratic direction, the prospects for Democrats in the midterm elections in 2022 will be dimmed; there's just no doubt about it," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics.
"We're sort of in this transition period right now where not everyone is vaccinated," said Dr. Bill Petri, an infectious disease expert at the University of Virginia.
Locations like Luxembourg or the Cayman Islands — countries and territories that for decades have been using near-zero tax rates to lure companies, their workers and their investment. “So the idea of a 15% minimum tax would just discourage companies from moving that offshore,” said Ruth Mason, a law and taxation professor at the University of Virginia.
