Wastewater testing has been critical in slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Now, the same University of Virginia doctors leading the program are saying it has new uses as the pandemic winds down. Dr. Amy Mathers, the UVA physician who led the wastewater testing research, says wastewater surveillance was originally developed to look for polio vaccine breakthroughs. Decades later, it can be used in the same capacity for COVID-19.
Emma Navarro is two wins away from a national championship. The Virginia freshman needed just 61 minutes to earn a 6-2, 6-1 win over LSU’s Paris Corley on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship in Orlando. Navarro (23-1) will face a familiar opponent in Thursday’s national semifinal, taking on top-seeded Sara Daavettila (22-1) of North Carolina.
(Commentary) Richmond Public Schools is funding administrators and teachers to get additional (online) credentials as Reading Specialists from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. There will be two positions eventually filled at each elementary and middle school:  a Literacy Coach and a Reading Interventionist. 
The Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act passed unanimously through a Senate committee Tuesday, and Sen. Tim Kaine expects it to become law. It’s designed to provide mental health services for medical professionals, and remove the stigma surrounding their seeking help. Breen, a Charlottesville native and UVA graduate, was an emergency room doctor last year in New York City when the pressure and constant death connected to COVID-19 led to her death by suicide.
Congress is still haggling over Biden’s infrastructure plan, but experts say the proposed funding for highway removal represents a shift in the way the government approaches transportation projects. “As recently as a decade ago,” said Peter D. Leah Carroll, a senior at Windsor High School, has been awarded one of the most highly selective merit scholarships in the nation. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation at the University of Virginia selected Carroll as one of 38 recipients of the Jefferson Scholarship. According to UVA’s website, the scholarship’s value exceeds $157,000 for in-state students and is intended to cover all four years of college. She will commence her studies in the fall at UVA in political science.
W. Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, argued that the Democrats’ proposal to raise the income cap for single parents would end up penalizing married couples. “I do not support this proposal because, in practice, it will end up being one more federal policy that makes marriage a bad financial deal for far too many families,” he said.

Virginia freshman Emma Navarro advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Tuesday with a straight-set victory over Georgia’s Meg Kowalski at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Navarro will take on LSU’s Paris Corley on Wednesday for a spot in the semifinals. Corley is ranked No. 60 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
UVA Health has hired Inova Health Systems executive Jennifer W. Siciliano as its new chief external affairs officer, starting Aug. 11. In her new role, Siciliano will build relationships with elected officials and their staff members at local, state and federal levels.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UVA Cancer Center saw a 75% decrease in human papillomavirus vaccinations. HPV can cause six different kinds of cancer. “We need to get people back in to get preventative services. We need to get people in to get catch up vaccines,” said Emma McKim Mitchell, co-director of global initiatives at the UVA School of Nursing.
Dozens of National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers across the country are urging people to get cancer-preventing human papillomavirus vaccinations. The University of Virginia Cancer Center is one of these centers and partner organizations.
