On Friday, UVA officially opens the new Hunter Smith Band Building, a $12 million structure funded almost entirely by its namesake, who has given more than a few dollars to the University in her time. Members of the United States Geological Survey have cautioned there's a slight possibility Tuesday's 5.8 magnitude earthquake may be a foreshock to a larger quake in the future. A foreshock is an earthquake that precedes a larger seismic event and is related to it in both time and space. However, a geologist at the University of Virginia says there's no need to worry. Dr. Thomas Biggs believes what Central Virginia experienced was the main earthquake.
UVA President Teresa Sullivan announced during a press conference in the Rotunda today (August 24) that John Simon will serve as the university’s next executive vice president and provost. Simon, a Duke University scientist who has served as vice provost for academic affairs there, will begin work September 1.

An innovative monitoring system for premature infants developed at the University of Virginia Health System is saving lives by spotting early signs of infection and other illnesses. Ten years ago, J. Randall Moorman, MD, a UVA cardiologist, and his team made acritical observation. They identified characteristic changes in the heart rate of babies with illness that appeared 12 or more hours before the infants showed any clinical signs. “We thought we could use this information to prevent these babies from becoming seriously ill,” says Moorman. ... The University of Virginia is stepping up their policies to better protect victims of sexual misconduct. The overhaul also aims to ensure a fair trial for those who are accused. ... It's the first time the policy has been revised since 2005. "The revisions are aimed at providing the best care and support for the victims," Sullivan said Wednesday during a news conference. "But at the same time being mindful of the due process and privacy rights of a student who is accused."

The Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Richmond-based Dominion Resources, has awarded grants totaling $530,000 to 16 Virginia colleges and universities. Dominion is the parent company of Dominion Virginia Power, the state’s largest electric utility. The grants are part of Dominion’s Higher Educational Partnership program, which coordinates company’s support of higher education with its work-force needs. ... Peter Jump, a spokesperson for University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, just 30 miles west of Mineral, told MedPage Today that operations there proceeded as normal, although physicians certainly heard the quake's roar. "It sounded like a train rumbling, and you could hear things moving" he said, adding that a facility in Zion Crossroads, Va., which is half way between Mineral and Charlottesville, wrapped up their dialysis procedures and closed for the rest of the day, as a precaution.
