After days of torrential, if intermittent, rain, it looks like University of Virginia students will graduate under clear skies. Preparations are proceeding on schedule, said Associate Director of Maintenance Mike Merriam, who is overseeing graduation setup. “We’ll gladly take a lot of rain Monday through Friday in exchange for beautiful weather on Saturday and Sunday, and that looks like what we’re going to get,” he said.
A popular medicine prescribed to lower cholesterol numbers might be ineffective, according to a study by the University of Virginia. The two-year study shows the drug ezetimibe, often available as Zetia, might not be effective at halting significant artery-wall thickening, or atherosclerosis, in some patients, according to a news release from UVa. Ezetimibe is routinely prescribed with statin therapy to help reduce high levels of LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad cholesterol,” in patients, the release said.

As higher-education institutions across Minnesota brace for steep budget cuts, the University of Minnesota’s law school expects its state appropriations will dry up completely within the next few years, Minnesota Public Radio reports. That would make it one of a handful of public law schools nationwide that are financially self-sufficient, meaning that they cover their costs entirely through private donations and tuition revenue. The University of Virginia’s law school adopted that model nearly a decade ago.

Tina Fey studied drama at the University of Virginia. But that genteel Southern collegiate pedigree would hardly suit Liz Lemon, her “30 Rock” alter ego. Instead, we are told that Lemon — Northern and cerebral, but also middle-class and hopelessly dorky — attended Bryn Mawr College and the University of Maryland, “on a partial competitive jazz dance scholarship.” Real colleges pop up all over our fictional landscapes, their names invoked to breathe life and depth into characters. The universities of Minnesota and Virginia serve as backdrops in “Freedom...

The legal storm over a former University of Virginia professor’s documents regarding climate change research flared again Monday as a national organization sought a court order to expedite its request to see the papers. The environment law center at the American Tradition Institute joined Del. Robert Marshall, R-Prince William, in asking a Prince William County judge to order UVa to hurry up the process.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise welcomed a new coach to the Cavalier staff this week, as Abby Hearn was named the head coach of the women’s basketball program. She joins the UVa-Wise ranks after four years as the head coach of the Eureka College women’s basketball and tennis teams. A coach with experience at many different levels including the NCAA Division II level, Hearn replaces Doug Carter who coached the team on an interim basis a season ago.
All five polls are finally in agreement: Virginia has the top-ranked baseball team in the country. That would make hosting a regional and perhaps a super regional a lock as the postseason closes in. Also, with one more ACC win in a road series that starts Thursday at North Carolina, the Cavaliers (45-6, 22-5 ACC) will also secure the No.1 seed in the league tournament.
For the first time, Emily Nole felt that she was more than just a middle school student. Thanks to a government class at South Warren Middle School, the 14-year-old now feels like she has a voice. … The program, which is hosted by the University of Virginia Center for Politics, prompts students to become legislators for a few weeks.

… We recently announced that the horse industry in Virginia has an annual economic impact of $1.2 billion, according to a study released by the Weldon Cooper Center at the University of Virginia. The equine industry’s influence is felt in all parts of the state and we see a very positive effect on jobs, recreation, tourism, retail sales and state and local taxation. The horse industry in Virginia generated $65.3 million in state and local taxes in 2010.
Approximately $600 million stands between the University of Virginia and a $3 billion fundraising campaign. Bridging that gap falls to Robert D. Sweeney, who has less than eight months to achieve that goal. Sweeney is U.Va.'s senior vice president for development and public affairs. Sweeney told the Daily Progress of Charlottesville he considers the ambitious $3 billion finish line within reach.
