For this week's UVa Today, Dustin Cable of the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service visited the Newsplex to discuss its new research about demographic changes in Virginia that could impact the 2012 election. The research shows the way Virginians voted in the 2008 Presidential election could be a precursor of things to come. During that election Virginia turned from a red state to a blue state. The Commonwealth has seen an increase in minorities living in the state, which could provide an edge for Democrats.
The University of Virginia is the highest ranked public institution on the latest list of America’s 650 Top Colleges from Forbes Magazine. UVA comes in at #36 and joins five other public schools in the top 50. William & Mary is ranked 40th. The top five are Princeton, Williams, Stanford, Chicago and Yale. Forbes says the list focuses on quality of teaching, careerprospects, high graduation rates and low levels of debt.
The University of Virginia has received a one-month extension from its accrediting agency to answer questions about the recent rift between the board of visitors and the president. Belle S. Wheelan, president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, said Wednesday that U.Va.\'s response is now due at the end of August.

The owner of the local Mooyah restaurant recently treated 11 third-graders from Florida to burgers, fries and shakes as a part of "Destination College 2012." The new and improved Lannigan field on UVa Grounds is officially open to the public and it’s already getting a lot of use. About 80 runners with the Charlottesville Track Club held a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6 a.m. Wednesday before taking a few laps.
Contractors are working hard to repair chimneys in the University of Virginia's Academical Village in time for the upcoming semester. The Academical Village dates back to UVA's founding in 1819. James Zehmer, the Construction Preservation Manager at UVA, says a fire ban was put in place after an inspection last year found cracks in most of the chimneys.
The man who oversaw Allstate Corp.'s "Mayhem" advertising campaign and Cadillac's "Break Through" Led Zeppelin campaign is headed to Ford Motor Co.'s advertising agency. Mark LaNeve, a former General Motors Co. executive who most recently was chief marketing officer at Allstate, will soon join Team Detroit as chief operating officer.
