Leah Carroll, a senior at Windsor High School, has been awarded one of the most highly selective merit scholarships in the nation. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation at the University of Virginia selected Carroll as one of 38 recipients of the Jefferson Scholarship. According to UVA’s website, the scholarship’s value exceeds $157,000 for in-state students and is intended to cover all four years of college. She will commence her studies in the fall at UVA in political science.
W. Virginia freshman Emma Navarro advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Tuesday with a straight-set victory over Georgia’s Meg Kowalski at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Navarro will take on LSU’s Paris Corley on Wednesday for a spot in the semifinals. Corley is ranked No. 60 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
UVA Health has hired Inova Health Systems executive Jennifer W. Siciliano as its new chief external affairs officer, starting Aug. 11. In her new role, Siciliano will build relationships with elected officials and their staff members at local, state and federal levels.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UVA Cancer Center saw a 75% decrease in human papillomavirus vaccinations. HPV can cause six different kinds of cancer. “We need to get people back in to get preventative services. We need to get people in to get catch up vaccines,” said Emma McKim Mitchell, co-director of global initiatives at the UVA School of Nursing.
Dozens of National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers across the country are urging people to get cancer-preventing human papillomavirus vaccinations. The University of Virginia Cancer Center is one of these centers and partner organizations.

In Virginia, the commonwealth’s attorney general previously announced individual schools could make their own decisions. The University of Virginia announced a July 1 vaccination deadline to return to campus. Other public schools, Virginia Tech for example, are still only recommending vaccinations. A UVA spokesperson said while the school is still finalizing exemption guidance, they expect it to be similar to exemptions they currently offer for the MMR vaccine.

He was 94. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1949 and enrolled at the University of Virginia Law School before leaving to join the Marines during the Korean War. He returned to law school to obtain his degree in 1953.
