UVA political scientist Larry Sabato reckons that since the 2008 election, Democrats have suffered a net loss of 13 governorships, nine U.S. Senate seats, 63 U.S. House seats and 949 seats in the 50 state legislatures. The GOP controls 32 of those Legislatures and after inauguration days, will have 33 governorships. In 23 states, including Missouri, Republicans will have a trifecta: both houses of the Legislature and the governor’s office.
UVA sociologist Josipa Roksa said more colleges and universities in recent years have begun to rethink their core course requirements. Although it’s a good start, the policy doesn’t go far enough, said Christopher Ali, an assistant professor in UVA’s Department of Media Studies. “If this content is vetted by users and vetted by trusted news sources … after all of this deliberation [Facebook] is just putting a warning up, I wonder if it's going to make a difference.”
There also may be some politics at play, said Larry Sabato, director of UVA’s Center for Politics, because Putin’s alleged involvement boosted the GOP. “It’s just based on the ancient principle that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I don’t think it’s much more complicated than that,” Sabato said.
Visiting scientists from UVA have used the facilities of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source to observe their chemistry in action. “To be really technologically relevant,” said Joshua Choi, assistant professor of chemical engineering at the University of Virginia, “we need to be able to scale up this process while maintaining or even improving the efficiency of the solar cell.
