It is not uncommon for a child in today's society to be raised in a single-parent household, but Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, says that children growing up in such a family structure are more likely to struggle with hardships such as delinquency or teenage pregnancy. "Most kids who are raised by single parents turn out OK. The flip side of that coin is kids who are raised in single-(parent) families are two to three times more likely to drop out of high school, for instance," Wilcox said, adding that boys raised in single-parent fami...

The website, innovation.virginia.edu/impact/products, features details on the development and commercialization process for business, consumer, computer-related, medical and therapeutic products. About 40 of the products are available on the market.
Leonard Sandridge spent 44 years as chief operating officer of UVA. His successor, Michael Strine, was on the job for 13 months. Initially hailed as an effective leader whose experience as chief financial officer at Johns Hopkins could put the University and its medical center on firm financial footing, Strine’s brief tenure serves as a reminder of the collateral damage caused by the turmoil that shook Grounds over the summer after the failed ouster of President Teresa Sullivan.
New details are emerging from the Teresa Sullivan saga at the University of Virginia just days before the Board of Visitors retreat. In emails between Rector Helen Dragas and the Board's publicist between the time of Sullivan's ouster and subsequent reinstatement, Dragas asked for the publicist to write a statement saying, "Today, I have asked the Governor not to reappoint me to a second term as rector."
Following a debate about the future of the University of Virginia that lead to the removal and eventual reinstatement of President Teresa Sullivan, UVa deans and Provost John Simon are offering a road map for the future of the school. The group delivered a letter to Sullivan that identifies goals and lays out a process by which UVa can plan for the future.
The provost and deans of the University of Virginia have written a letter urging a collaborative approach to setting a strategic direction for U.Va. and addressing "macro issues" on governance that put the university at a disadvantage. The letter from Provost John Simon and the deans of all 11 schools and the University Library was addressed to President Teresa Sullivan, who summarized it in an Aug. 6 letter to the board of visitors. The board and Sullivan will meet this week in Richmond for a retreat and orientation for new members. The sessions at the Omni Richmond Hotel are the first since ...

Provost John Simon and the deans of all 11 schools and the University Library have delivered a letter to President Teresa Sullivan that offers a potential road map to the future. The letter's authors say UVA mustspell out its current strengths and weaknesses, and devise strategies to differentiate Virginia's flagship institution from its peers. The University of Virginia has received high marks from Forbes Magazine and U.S. News & World Report on both magazines’ annual list of top U.S. colleges. Despite differing methodologies, the two publications ranked UVA similarly: The University came in at 36 on Forbes’ top 100 and 25 on U.S. News’. While they acknowledge that the lists are closely watched, experts and administrators alike have downplayed the importance of the rankings. Forbes and U.S. News & World Report use different strategies to rank schools, according to their own reports. Forbes weighs “post-graduate success” above all el...
The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors will meet this week in Richmond for its summer retreat, marking the first time its members have met since they reinstated President Teresa A. Sullivan in late June. As the university’s leadership focuses on a message of reconciliation and progress, some members of the community continue to express reservations about the board’s performance this summer.
Some of the University of Virginia's Olympic athletes got a big welcome home celebration at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport Monday night. Team USA field hockey players Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese, both rising seniors at UVA, were greeted at the airport by the entire UVa field hockey team. Also on the same plane back to Charlottesville was UVa swimmerLauren Perdue, who won a gold medal in London as part of the United States 4x200 meter freestyle relay team.
Addressing a roomful of her academic colleagues from around the world, University of Virginia President and sociologist Teresa A. Sullivan said that gaining access for college can be a difficult but crucial step for lower- and middle-class students. “Without some level of post-secondary education, surviving in today’s economy can be a real challenge,” Sullivan said. The president gave the address as part of the opening of the International Sociological Association’s conference on “Labor Market and Educational Transitions in Uncertain Times.” She also was set to host a reception for participant...

As we think about the future of education, we need to sharpen our understanding of what education is and what educators do. Education is often compared to two other industries upended by the Internet: journalism and publishing. This is a serious error.
Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, says that children growing up in such a family structure are more likely to struggle with hardships such as delinquency or teenage pregnancy.
College students spend their summers lots of cool ways. You know: interning, lifeguarding, bugging Mom and Dad, discovering new molecules in space. Well, that last one's how Albemarle County resident and Piedmont Virginia Community College student Jolie Nyiramahirwe spent her summer. She was part of a team of students who found the molecule while doing summer research at the University of Virginia.
The man who was briefly interim president at the University of Virginia during this summer's presidential crisis had tough words for both President Teresa A. Sullivan and the Board of Visitors in emails released Friday, though he said the words were the result of a rapidly evolving situation and ignorance of a crucial memo. "What I would say is that you need to put in context that there were conversations also taking place here, telephone conversations, where we were at that point," Carl P. Zeithaml, dean of the McIntire School of Commerce, said Friday evening.
In an email four days after the agreement was announced, University of Virginia Rector Helen Dragas characterized the online partnership with Coursera as an apparent "knee-jerk reaction" to the issue she had raised in her attempt to fire the president.
