Stephen Clarkson of Rye has recently completed the first-ever biography of another notable son of New Hampshire: "A Different Time, A Different Man: The Story of John L. Sullivan." Another shocking killing -- one that happened in 1840 at the University of Virginia -- sheds further light on how to understand campus shootings. On Nov. 12, 1840, the dean of the faculty, law professor John Davis, heard gunfire. Discovering a masked student, Davis pursued, tried unmasking him, then gave up. As he turned to walk home, he was shot.
The University of Virginia and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are partnering to help tackle conservation issues. Thanks to a unique partnership with University of Virginia student researchers, the proof is in this natural drain is paying off.
In recent years, some wealthy private universities, including Harvard, Princeton and Stanford, have increased aid to middle- and upper-middle income families and replaced loans with grants. Among public schools, the University of Virginia in 2005 began capping the total amount a student could borrow and promised grants for any remaining need, even for some eligible households in the $100,000-income range, officials said.
