This December, lawmakers are bickering over another expiring provision: the payroll tax cut. Over the short term, allowing this cut to expire would be foolish. With the economy still sputtering, the last thing we need is a sweeping tax hike on people who actually work for a living. But extending the payroll tax cut will continue a disturbing trend in American politics: the gradual demise of the temporary tax cut.
In a conceptual computer science paper that has already started to generate attention both within the scientific press and mainstream media, a group of researchers from Microsoft and the University of Virginia explain how “data furnaces” could be used to heat individual homes.
Two researchers at the University of Virginia (Kamin Whitehouse and Jiakang Lu of the Engineering School) and four at Microsoft Research explored this possibility in a paper reviewed at the Usenix Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing: "The paper looks at how the servers -- though still operated by their companies -- could be placed inside homes and used as a source of heat. The authors call the concept the 'data furnace.'"
