From the University of Virginia, Matt Conrath has been named the ACC’s defensive lineman of the week, and Chase Minnifield has been named defensive back of the week. Conrath and Minnifield helped the Cavaliers knock off Duke, 31-21, on Saturday. Conrath had two tackles for loss, forced a fumble and blocked a Duke field-goal attempt. Minnifield ran an interception back 54 yards for a touchdown.

The number of Chinese undergraduates on U.S. campuses in the last school year increased 43 percent from the previous year, according to the annual Institute of International Education Open Doors report that was released today. … At the beginning of this school year, I tagged along with a group of Chinese students traveling from Dulles International Airport to the University of Virginia. In the last decade, U-Va. has seen its international student population increase 44 percent, with China being the most popular country of origin.
The first year of the University of Virginia’s non-binding early-action admissions program drew 11,417 applications from high-school students, according to the school. Students who applied by Nov. 1 hear back by Jan. 31, but aren’t obligated to enroll if accepted. Some students are neither accepted nor declined, but deferred to the regular admissions pool.

Dr. John Risher can't say he played in the first football game at Scott Stadium, which opened 80 years ago last month. The University of Virginia is drawing up plans to begin the first phase of a $50 million rotunda restoration this spring. But plans to cover the iconic dome could make for an eye-sore just in time for graduation ceremonies. Architects are working on the final details for construction to start in March or April. The latest plans put up a tent-like cover over the dome to protect it from nasty weather and it could be in place for more than a year.

Suicide is the leading cause of death among college students. That’s the chilling conclusion of a new study commissioned by James C. Turner, executive director of health services for the University of Virginia. Alcohol-related incidents were second. That means the top two causes of death among students are eminently preventable.

Friday the University of Virginia Board of Visitors approved a regulation prohibiting weapons at the University, its medical center and the College at Wise. The regulation, which will be submitted to the state next week, will go into effect upon publication in the Virginia Register and will be published later in the Virginia Administrative Code. No further state approvals are required.
The University of Virginia quietly replaced its weapons policy with a regulation Friday afternoon, bringing it into line with recent legal opinions on the issue. “The attempt was to codify our existing policy in such a way that it would be consistent with the attorney general’s guidance and the Supreme Court decision,” said Rector Helen Dragas after the day’s Board of Visitors meeting.
