Manassas National Battlefield Park kicked off the week marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s first major battle Monday by unveiling an exhibit featuring a belt buckle worn on the field by famed Confederate general Stonewall Jackson and a shotgun carried by southern partisan leader Col. Sure, police patrols and neighborhood watch groups help fight crime, but what about financial institutions? A new study out of the University of Virginia studied crime stats in several low-income, Latino neighborhoods in Virginia and North Carolina before and after credit unions targeting a Spanish-speaking customer base opened there. Following the establishment of the credit unions, robberies dropped.
Technology enabled Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services to hire a full-time child and adolescent psychiatrist on July 1. Danville and Pittsylvania County are mental health professional shortage areas, according to the Virginia Department of Health. The local community services board was the first in Virginia to use telemedicine to bridge the gap in access to child psychiatry. The agency had contracted with University of Virginia Medical Center using “telehealth” for 20 hours a week.
Five medical specialties at the University of Virginia Health System have been ranked among the top in the nation. It is the 19th consecutive year the hospital has been ranked among the top hospitals in the annual U.S. News & World Report’s guide, according to a media release from the U.Va. Health System.
