Virginia will spend $100 million next school year to boost the state's public colleges and universities. The governor and legislators say that money will give more Virginians a chance to earn a diploma. ... All of the major public universities in Virginia have approved tuition hikes for next school year but McDonnell says he wants to change that, "We want to reverse the trend in that last decade for the doubling of college tuitions. We want to keep a lid on these increases."
Virginia's colleges and universities will be adding 6,000 new slots for in-state students this fall thanks to initiatives enacted by the General Assembly this past session. The results from a survey taken by 4,506 Loudoun County Public Schools parents and employees are in, and overall, the outcome is positive. James Ellis, the director of research for the Center of Survey Research at the University of Virginia, presented the School Board with the survey's concluding information during its June 14 meeting. Last year, the school system and the Center for Survey Research, teamed up to determine the feelings of parents and teachers about issues facing the school system-2,603 parents, 1,1213 employees and 690 people in dual roles responded.

Babies who are breastfed - especially those only fed breast milk, and not formula as well - are less likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, suggests a new analysis of past studies. While the findings can't prove that breastfeeding causes the lower risk of SIDS, the authors write in Pediatrics that other explanations seem unlikely. "Breastfeeding is the best method of feeding infants," said Dr. Fern Hauck, the study's lead author from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville.
