Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine say a strain of the bacterium most commonly behind hospital-acquired infections subverts the body's natural defenses. A new strain of the Clostridium difficile bacterium also kills up to 15 percent of infected patients, including those who are given antibiotic treatments.
A trio of researchers with the University of Chicago, the University of San Francisco and the University of Virginia has found via experimentation that people watching video of actions by other people in slow motion tend to have a distorted view of perceived intent. In their paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Eugene Caruso, Zachary Burns and Benjamin Converse outline their experiments with volunteers, what they found and why they now believe that the use of slow motion video as evidence in court cases and by officials at sporting events should be changed.
Virginia undergraduates will pay an average of $545 more in tuition and all mandatory fees to attend a four-year public university this academic year, and even less if the College of William & Mary and the University of Virginia are excluded. The variable rate structures charged by W&M and UVA complicate averages, but 97 percent of in-state undergraduate students will see tuition increases of 3 percent or less, he said. With mandatory fees, the average increase for two- and four-year institutions is $369, or 3.6 percent, excluding W&M and UVA.
(By William H. Goodwin Jr., rector of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors) The University of Virginia’s Strategic Investment Fund is anything but a so-called “slush fund,” as it recently has been mischaracterized. That makes for catchy headlines, but it is false and irresponsible.
University of Virginia leaders responded to state lawmakers’ questions Monday evening, seeking to allay concerns about a $2.2 billion “strategic investment” fund. The university’s $2.2 billion fund, announced last month, is anticipated to generate as much as $100 million a year. But it sparked concern from some state lawmakers who asked for an explanation for such a large fund separate from the endowment.
The program included a robotics project, a chemistry exploration, a visit to the McCormick Observatory, a question-and-answer session with a panel of UVA STEM students and staff and a talk from UVA professor and former astronaut Kathryn Thornton.
In MONEY magazine’s recently released rankings of the 705 best-value colleges in the U.S., more state schools than ever before landed near the top. The University of Virginia  ranked No. 3.
William H. Goodwin Jr. , rector of the UVA Board of Visitors, argues that the Strategic Investment Fund is important, not only to the university and its students, but to the commonwealth.
An Albemarle County man who delivered a passionate speech at the Democratic National Convention says one of the most memorable moments was off-the-cuff. Hillary Clinton invited Khizr Khan to represent his family and honor his son, a University of Virginia grad who died serving as a Marine in Iraq.
“It’s safe to day the ratings have no electoral meaning,” according to Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. And their convention viewership often is linked to dramatic appeal that may be irrelevant to voters’ preferences.
Brandon Garrett, a University of Virginia law professor who wrote a book detailing the degree to which false testimony from jailhouse informants contributes to wrongful convictions, suggests that such testimony should be banned altogether. "If they are to be used there should be reliability review by a judge and all statements and interviews they give should be videotaped.  All leniency offers should be documented and disclosed," he said in an email interview.
To better understand the behaviors, characteristics, and skills of future C-Level leaders, I interviewed Dr. Kristin Behfar, Associate Professor of Leadership and Organizations at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, who has conducted extensive research on how to lead teams and global strategic change effectively. In full disclosure, I work with Behfar; I find her research on conflict management and team leadership extremely helpful in providing unique insight into the traits, behaviors, and characteristics required of future C-Level leaders. What follows are her ...
(By Robert Pianta, Novartis Professor of Education and Dean of the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia) “Most of the ‘effects’ of private education are attributable to families’ influences on children as they grow up, and the family resources and decisions that place these children in private schools - not the private school per se. If there is an effect of private schooling, it is due primarily to the influence of peers on learning and motivation, which tends to be somewhat greater in private school classrooms. In contrast, the evidence is reasonabl...
Throughout the Albemarle County Police Department, officers say they are grateful for the community support they have received, but most still feel the need to have a heightened sense of awareness and vigilance. Doughnuts, cookies, fruit and cards cover the table and countertops in the department’s kitchen, along with kind notes left on patrol car windshields—evidence of a supportive community, they said.On Monday, the Charlottesville and Albemarle County police foundations will give city, county and University of Virginia officers a free barbecue lunch to thank them for their work...
At a time when concern over the price of college is ubiquitous and populist fears of deepening inequality are pervasive, it's easy to fall prey to the idea that state university systems are failing low-income students. But the reality is much less sinister: State tuition subsidies actually favor these students over their wealthier peers, contrary to what many seem to believe. Rich students, for example, are more likely to have the admissions test scores (SAT and ACT) and financial resources necessary to attend selective state flagship universities, such as the University of Virginia or the...
When Capt. Humayun Khan was ordered to Iraq a dozen years ago, his father wanted to talk to him about being an American Muslim soldier sent to war in a Muslim country. His son, though, was focused only on the job at hand.
(By Daniel Willingham, UVA professor of psychology) I’ve been asked this question a lot and I hate it. I’ll describe why in a bit, but for now I’ll just change it to “does your mind do more or less the same thing when you listening to an audiobook and when you read print?” The short answer is “mostly.”
(By Allan Stam, dean and Gerald Warburg, a professor at the Batten School) The tumult in global markets caused by the Brexit vote and the overheated rhetoric coming from the U.S. presidential campaign obliges a reassessment of the role nationalism should play in the 21st century.
