In countries where there is a strong agreement about the norms around parenting, parents may worry less about their own choices. Without a single overarching parenting tradition, American parents may feel like they have “too many choices” as compared to parents in more homogeneous cultures, says W. Bradford Wilcox, an associate professor of sociology and the director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia. “A clear and well-defined script can be psychologically comforting,” he said, and its lack can leave parents feeling “unmoored.”
The perpetrators of these attacks are often disillusioned young men, and they inhabit the same publicity-obsessed culture as everybody else. Killing offers the prospect of becoming a household name. “This seems like a way to achieve some recognition and respect they lack in their daily lives,” said Dewey Cornell, a forensic clinical psychologist at the University of Virginia. “We live in a world where people are really conscious of their social standing and audience,” he said.
Sen. Marco Rubio was so over the Senate that he missed more than half of the chamber’s votes in late 2015 and repeatedly mocked his colleagues for being useless. Now, the Florida Republican is giving serious thought to revoking his retirement and running to rejoin his fellow senators for another term. Kyle Kondik of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics said Mr. Rubio would have his work cut out for him in the primary and general election if he runs. “Rubio’s star has dimmed after his presidential race, and he could potentially face problems in both a primary...

The subtle type of violence that LGBTQ people experience throughout their lives, like discrimination and family rejection, "often snowballs into larger problems," according to Doug Meyer, a UVA sociologist and the author of a book that examines different forms of anti-LGBT violence. In his book, Meyer found that LGBT people with fewer financial resources were more likely to experience that snowball effect and eventually experience issues like homelessness, lack of work, and a cycle of poverty.
Larry Sabato, head of UVA’s Center for Politics, says there is a distinction between Brat’s ouster of Cantor and Taylor’s upset of Forbes on Tuesday night. “The Cantor defeat was a scream from the Republican base,” Sabato said. “The rejection of Forbes by 2nd District Republicans is more like – ‘Huh. Who do you think you are?’ ”
Democrats are touting that the 4th District race between Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, and Democratic challenger Doug Owens is now being called a "toss-up" by a UVA professor. Larry J. Sabato's "Crystal Ball" ratings for the race changed Thursday from "leans Republican," citing concerns over the impact on voters of controversial billionaire businessman and reality TV star Donald Trump being at the top of the GOP ticket.
Like nearly all academic fields, special education researchers face several challenges that make replicating research findings a challenging prospect. “First of all, there would be considerable resistance in many other quarters. And there might be efforts in Congress to deny funding for certain kinds of policies, particularly ones that might have a huge impact on powerful American constituencies. There would be some of that before the final shape of the implemented policy would take place,” said David Martin, an immigration policy consultant and a UVA professor of international law.
“Trump never had Teflon with anybody but his 35-40 percent slice of the GOP,” UVA political scientist Larry J. Sabato said Wednesday. “That's more than enough to win a nomination with 17 candidates in the field, but it doesn't translate to a much larger, diverse electorate in November.”

Think of Floyd County, which has recently become part of the greater Blacksburg area. Or Culpeper becoming part of the D.C. region. Or Matthews County being added to Hampton Roads. Researchers at UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center say these areas present a paradox – they’re growing but they not adding jobs.
