He warns of “synthetic agrotoxins” harming birds and insects and “bioaccumulation” from industrial waste. He calls for renewable fuel subsidies and “maximum energy efficiency.” And although he offers prayers at the beginning and end of his heavily anticipated missive on the environment, Pope Francis unmasks himself not only as a very green pontiff, but also as a total policy wonk. “The pope will expand the language typically used to describe human-Earth relations,”said Willis Jenkins, a University of Virginia religious studies professor who write...
Every year around the country, between 10 and 40 percent of high school seniors planning on college change their minds or talk themselves out of their plans.  At Melrose High School in Orange Mound, and six other SCS high schools, 13 counselors are working the summer shift again this year, hoping to connect with 70 percent of the senior class any way they can, including text messages. Nationally, the efforts are paying off, said Dr. Ben Castleman, assistant professor at the University of Virginia, whose latest book on the subject is “The 160-Character Solution: How Text Messages and...
After Jeb Bush and Donald Trump announced their presidential campaigns this week, there are now a dozen republicans running for the oval office. However the University of Virginia's Center for Politics doesn't expect that field to narrow any time soon. Geoff Skelley of the Center for Politics says at least two more republican lawmakers are planning to throw their hat in the ring for 2016, such as Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Skelley doesn't expect a republican frontrunner to emerge until early 2016.
“I was ecstatic. All I could do was smile and yell.” This was Martese Johnson’s first reaction upon hearing that the charges brought against him in his March 18, 2015 arrest – public intoxication or swearing and obstruction of justice without force — were dropped. As for Johnson, he says he hopes people will use what happened to him as a chance to reflect on the racial tensions that are still very much present across the country.
Connected through baseball, one College World Series team has extra inspiration in its dugout. Since the University of Virginia arrived last week, they've been remembering Omaha police Officer Kerrie Orozco, who died recently in the line of duty.
Sarah Rumbaugh went into business school at Darden and came out a matchmaker: between MBA students and recruiters. Rumbaugh and her fellow Darden MBA 2015 graduate Zach Mayo today launched RelishMBA, an online service aiming to transform the way MBA students connect with employers – to the benefit of both.
(By Gerald Warburg, assistant dean of the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia) The extraordinary encyclical issued by Pope Francis this week holds great promise for an issue that affects all life on our fragile planet. This remarkable document essentially reframes an issue that has long been mired in a false and polarizing jobs-vs.-the-environment dichotomy.

Millions of Americans could lose their insurance if the U.S. Supreme Court rules against President Barack Obama on his health-care law. And with the decision due in the next two weeks, the government has no backup plan. Many states say that setting up their own exchanges would be too expensive -- or their governments are run by Republicans who refuse to do that. The Republican-controlled U.S. Congress is more interested in repealing the health-care law than in revising it. “There’s a significant constituency within the Republican Party which is ‘repeal or nothing,’&rdqu...
Dr. Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, helps explain the evolution of the presidential announcement: How did they used to do it? “In the old days … a senator or candidate would [announce] in one of the press rooms of the U.S. Senate or one of the committee hearing rooms. That’s certainly how John F. Kennedy did it.”
Donald Trump is unlikely to ever be President — but he could sure shake things up in the 2016 Republican primary debates. The Donald could make the cut for the primetime showdowns — the first one is set for early August in Ohio — if he remains among the top 10 GOP contenders based on his performance in national polls. The bombastic Trump will "make the debate more entertaining and possibly hike the ratings, but he could also raise the temperature," Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia said. "He clearly is no fan of Jeb Bush. The challenge w...
The swell of addictions, overdoses, and crimes rooted in drug use has Virginia lawmakers taking action. University of Virginia Associate Professor Dr. Robin Hamill-Ruth suggested lawmakers set up more parameters for pain management specialists to make sure patients are in good hands. "The public is really not aware of the breadth of what gets you a certificate on your wall. It's very difficult for the public and referring physicians to know what ar...

A new low-power microchip could be the future of preventive health care. Researchers at the University of Virginia are developing wearable technology that monitors a person's health in real time. UVA's microchip development is part of a larger nanotech collaboration with the Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST) Center headquartered at North Carolina State University.
Experts may be closer than ever to finding cures for and ways to prevent neurological illnesses like autism, Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. That's thanks to researchers at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine who just discovered previously unknown vessels that directly connect the brain to the immune system. I can't emphasize this enough: This is huge news.
