MONEY ranks colleges based on 27 measures of educational quality, affordability, and alumni success. In each category, we used at least one "value-added" measure, which reveals a school's performance after subtracting the impact of its average student's test scores and percentage of low-income students. The University of Virginia ranks No. 11 out of 50 best public colleges.

A recent Central High School graduate and his parents credit a University of Virginia’s College at Wise Early College Academy program with going far to help him prepare for the next academic step. For Ali Qureshi, that’ll be going to Harvard University. The academy is the brainchild of UVA-Wise Provost Sanders Huguenin and is starting its fourth year on campus.
Former Virginia basketball standouts London Perrantes and Anthony Gill both wrapped up play in the NBA’s Orlando Summer League on a high note on Thursday. Perrantes had 11 points, five rebounds and two assists for the Miami Heat in their 91-72 loss to the New York Knicks, while Gill finished with eight points and six rebounds for the Charlotte Hornets in their 86-78 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Rita Dove, Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia and the former Poet Laureate of the United States is one of three inaugural winners of the Roosevelt “Rosey” Thompson Award from U.S. Presidential Scholars Foundation.
George Shields, provost and a professor of chemistry at Furman University, and UVA’s Brooks H. Pate have established a strong collaboration that has resulted in four publications on small water clusters since 2012, including two in Science. This collaboration, instigated by Pate, is built on a strong foundation of mutual respect, and was only possible because of the previous highly cited work of Shields and his undergraduate researchers.
“It sure doesn’t sound good,” Dr. Christopher Holstege, the chief of UVA’s Division of Medical Toxicology, said of the snortable chocolate, adding that he was especially concerned for people who have asthma or children with growing lungs.
