A trio of researchers with the University of Chicago, the University of San Francisco and the University of Virginia has found via experimentation that people watching video of actions by other people in slow motion tend to have a distorted view of perceived intent. In their paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Eugene Caruso, Zachary Burns and Benjamin Converse outline their experiments with volunteers, what they found and why they now believe that the use of slow motion video as evidence in court cases and by officials at sporting events should be changed.
Virginia undergraduates will pay an average of $545 more in tuition and all mandatory fees to attend a four-year public university this academic year, and even less if the College of William & Mary and the University of Virginia are excluded. The variable rate structures charged by W&M and UVA complicate averages, but 97 percent of in-state undergraduate students will see tuition increases of 3 percent or less, he said. With mandatory fees, the average increase for two- and four-year institutions is $369, or 3.6 percent, excluding W&M and UVA.

University of Virginia leaders responded to state lawmakers’ questions Monday evening, seeking to allay concerns about a $2.2 billion “strategic investment” fund. The university’s $2.2 billion fund, announced last month, is anticipated to generate as much as $100 million a year. But it sparked concern from some state lawmakers who asked for an explanation for such a large fund separate from the endowment.
The program included a robotics project, a chemistry exploration, a visit to the McCormick Observatory, a question-and-answer session with a panel of UVA STEM students and staff and a talk from UVA professor and former astronaut Kathryn Thornton.
