Last Wednesday, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee was at the University of Virginia talking with Dr. Larry Sabato’s Introduction to American Politics class. It was the latest in a recent series of college-speaking trips that began, Chafee said, with an invitation from Princeton University that led him to inquire if other schools might be interested in having him come speak about his experiences at all levels of government and in both political parties.

Few college students expect to end up working with their professors, but one of TV’s leading ladies is now sharing the credits with her mentor – a professor of drama department at UVA. If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, you might recognize the voice of Sarah Drew – better known as Dr. April Kepner. She’s had that role for five years, thanks in part to University of Virginia Drama Professor Richard Warner.
(Commentary) Given enough time to get outraged, it is possible to find just about anyone who delivers a college commencement speech to be objectionable. I've been to three commencement ceremonies at my alma mater -- at one I saw Virginia Gov. George Allen speak, at another I saw media superstar Katie Couric. Chances are that the people who liked the one would have had objections to the other. Whatever. They both spoke and the intellectual edifices of the University of Virginia remained standing.

Ayres and a few others refused to speculate on whether Bush will run. “Only Bush can answer that,” said Larry J. Sabato, University of Virginia political scientist. “No one beyond his family could possibly know. . . The guessing game is pointless. We'll find out when they decide.”
The Biophilic Cities network is aiming to find ways of making sure this need is met in the world's urban centres. The project's director, professor Tim Beatley, chair of the department of urban and environmental planning at the University of Virginia, said the support for “biophilic” design – from green spaces in workplaces, hospitals and homes, had been growing dramatically. He said: “Less attention, however, has been focused on the city or urban scale, despite the fact that the planet continues an inexorable trend in the direction of urbanisation. Urban reside...

The Large Magellanic Cloud’s relatively close location to Earth also affords astronomers the chance to study it in more detail, with the aim of using that understanding to extrapolate to how other galaxies behave. One example is through its rotation, which was picked up by the Hubble Space Telescope in results released in February 2014. "Studying this nearby galaxy by tracking the stars' movements gives us a better understanding of the internal structure of disk galaxies," said Nitya Kallivayalil, a researcher at the University of Virginia who participated in the research, ...

When Spencer Ingram launched HackCville in 2012, the 2007 UVA grad saw the student-centric off-Grounds startup incubator as a way for undergraduates to take their aspiring careers in tech into their own hands. Students came to the Elliewood Avenue “clubhouse” with ideas, and got the mentoring and advice they needed to turn them into real businesses and products. HackCville has changed since then, but in a way Ingram sees as purely positive: It’s now a 501(c)3 run entirely by its student members, who come from all walks of UVA life—not just programmers and techies, but d...
