It's likely that in the long term, Bush's presidency and the Iraq War will be judged more circumspectly by scholars and historians. Feaver pointed to a recent lecture by University of Virginia history professor Melvyn Leffler, in which he called for a more nuanced examination of why Bush invaded Iraq.
With that kind of success in mind, a flood of companies are likely to seek funding when the crowdfunding investment sites are up and running, says Sean Carr, director of intellectual capital at the University of Virginia's Batten Institute, a part of the Darden School of Business. "There are plenty of capital constrained entrepreneurs right now. They'll take whatever opportunities come along and if they think it'll be relatively easy to do it that way, they'll try it," he says.
Although economic challenges persist, the American dream is something people still enthusiastically strive for, said the event’s key speaker, Peter Rodriguez, a professor and chief diversity officer at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.
The University of Virginia says Attorney General Eric Holder has postponed a scheduled visit to the school because of the ongoing developments in relation to the Boston Marathon bombing.
Fairfax High School and Madison High School honored senior student Drew Bonner on Monday. Drew gets the ceremonial first at-bat. Drew is in a wheelchair, but he hasn’t let that stop him from being a four-year varsity team manager, a braggart about his days skunking kids in Little League and a soon-to-be student at the University of Virginia on an academic scholarship.
University of Virginia students came out Tuesday for the fourth annual Be The Match Bone Marrow Drive, put on by Mike London and the UVa. football team. Agriculture and forestry are Virginia's largest industries, with a combined economic impact of $79 billion annually: $55 billion from agriculture and $24 billion from forestry. "Maybe he walks around in Richmond and runs into people and they say, 'We really wish you'd run.' So he gets this feeling that maybe there was a space for an independent run out there," said Geoff Skelley, a political analyst with the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.
Brandon Garrett, a University of Virginia law professor, writes that 36 of the 37 false confessions he had studied included some details of the relevant crime, that is, every one but Hayes'. Because the suspects who implicated themselves are now known to be innocent, we can assume that investigators – consciously or otherwise – gave crime-scene details that the suspects later parroted back. But Hayes, Garrett writes, "relayed no specific information concerning the crime. Hayes was still convicted, though DNA excluded him and his co-defendant."
So what are the odds that some influential McCullough-like scribe will one day start a trend by favoring Dubya with a measure of compassionate revisionism? “Not a chance,” said political scientist Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “He’s got three strikes against him, and history is not going to forgive Katrina, the Iraq War, and economic collapse. Good luck overcoming all that. Three strikes? Forget it. The best he can hope for is an average grade.”

(Commentary) I learned many fascinating things while taking a series of free online college courses over the last few months. I signed up for 11 courses. The bulk were on Coursera, but I also dabbled with courses sponsored by edX and Udacity. Here, my report card on the current state of MOOCs.
(Editorial) Accidental death by prescription drugs might be the worst ailment Southwest Virginia faces, as the rates of such tragedies have increased by 40 percent in our community in just five years. Curing this ailment requires a multi-angled approach, one that the Healthy Appalachia Institute – of which U.Va. is a partner – adopted as a blueprint a couple years ago: the prescription demands equal doses of education, prevention and appropriate treatment.
The two-year Richard Bland – a stopover on their way to a bachelor’s degree – is a college in transition itself. The junior college of the College of William and Mary, RBC last week announced that it will add intercollegiate athletics in the fall. On Tuesday, the college will launch a Center for Strategic Initiatives that will include a Language Institute and Global Education Skills Alliance. RBC’s new president, Debbie L. Sydow, who succeeded James B. McNeer in July, says the college holds “a sweet spot” in Virginia, drawing students who want “a softe...
The sudden and uncontrollable paedophilia exhibited by a 40-year-old man was caused by an egg-sized brain tumour, his doctors have told a scientific conference. And once the tumour had been removed, his sex-obsession disappeared. The cancer was located in the right lobe of the orbifrontal cortex, which is known to be tied to judgment, impulse control and social behaviour. But neurologists Russell Swerdlow and Jeffrey Burns, of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, believe it is the first reported case linking damage to the region with paedophilia.
(Commentary) ACC fans, rejoice. All those stupid rumors you’ve been hearing for the past several months about the conference crumbling have been buried in a heap of paperwork that has solidified the league for the next 13 years. The ACC announced Monday that all 15 schools, including newcomers Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Notre Dame, and future member Louisville, had all agreed to and signed a “grant of rights,” which is effective immediately.
Today’s political campaigns run together, former Virginia Gov. Gerald Baliles said Monday in Danville. Politicians used to campaign for office and then govern.
