(Alf) Weaver, director of U.Va.’s Applied Research Institute and a professor of computer science) Computing and information technology are among the fastest growing U.S. industries, and participating in efforts to attract and retain a diverse workforce will provide a valuable contribution toward meeting future demands in these professions.

A senior higher education development executive with considerable experience in major campaigns has been appointed by the University of Cambridge to lead its development and alumni relations programmes. Alison Traub is currently Campaign Director for the University of Virginia’s $3 billion campaign and Associate Vice-President for Development there.

In recent years, however, a team of survey researchers at the University of Virginia noticed a potentially cost-cutting silver lining in the massive growth of cell phone usage: Most of the Americans with unlisted landline numbers now have mobile phone service. So it may be possible, at least in theory, to reach virtually all adults with a combination of RDD samples of mobile phones and of listed landline phones.

Opposition to same-sex marriage will almost certainly be a losing battle for Republicans, except in very conservative states, said Kyle Kondik, a political analyst with the University of Virginia. “Young people see gay marriage as a civil rights issue, and they aren’t going to change their minds about it,” Kondik said.
