Local runners and the University of Virginia are celebrating the best fundraising figures in the history of the Women's Four-Miler. The total is $340,000, and it's destined to go for breast cancer research.
The Martinsville-based New College Institute’s health care program initially will train medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and first-responders, to use electronic devices to remotely monitor patients’ conditions at home. Bennett S. Barbour died Thursday after a long battle with bone cancer. The University of Virginia is one of 10 institutions of higher education to receive a the 2013 Beckman Scholars Award from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, which will help further undergraduate research in the sciences.
