As of July 2020, Richmond’s population of children ages 5 to 19 totaled 29,219, according to the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center, which issues the annual projections. Even though the city’s total population jumped more than 12 percent between 2010 and 2020, the Weldon Cooper projection represents a drop of 5,600 school-age children from 2008 and nearly 2,000 fewer school-age children than the center projected in 2012.

On Thursday afternoon, parents of patients at UVA Children’s got to do some secret shopping, thanks to the annual Season’s Treatings event. Each year, UVA Children’s medical staff set up a toy shop inside the hospital so parents can easily pick out toys for their children receiving treatment as well as their siblings.

Jared Brown, a 30-year-old University of Virginia graduate, was grateful for the gubernatorial pardon he got in October for an assault and underage intoxication conviction that landed him in jail for about a month during his freshman year. “It felt really empowering to be here with other people,” said Brown, one of five people Gov. Ralph Northam has pardoned who shared stories last week at event celebrating Northam’s pardons on Brown’s Island in Richmond near the new Emancipation and Freedom Monument.
