University of Virginia School of Medicine researchers recently made a discovery that could help prevent people from going blind. Researchers found a link between lupus, a potentially debilitating autoimmune disorder, and macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness. Their findings show that the two diseases share a common contributor to harmful inflammation.
A philosopher once described European philosophy as essentially “a series of footnotes to Plato”; it would be no exaggeration to describe the history of political philosophy over the past half-century as a series of footnotes and responses to John Rawls. The Harvard philosopher looms over contemporary political thought, particularly on the left, in a way rivaled by no other scholar. When he died in 2002, one remembrance noted that over 3,000 articles specifically about Rawls had been published during his lifetime. A Theory of Justice, his most famous work, has been cited nearly 60,000 times by...

(By Seanna Leath, assistant professor of psychology, and Diane-Jo Bart-Plange, doctoral student) Coined in 1982 by Black womanist poet and activist Alice Walker, colorism is a global manifestation of white supremacy that affords greater privileges to people of color with lighter skin tones.
Dewey Cornell, an education professor at the University of Virginia, has developed a widely used threat assessment tool and said that the Oxford, Michigan case could have been handled by a threat assessment team.
The report doesn’t advocate geoengineering the oceans, just exploring how it could be done. “We don’t answer the question, ‘Should we’?” said panel chairman Scott Doney, a UVA biogeochemist. “The question is, ‘Can we?’ And if we do, what would be the impacts? And one of the things we try to highlight is that all of these approaches will have impacts.”

The process requires applying several layers. However, that approach causes a chemical reaction with desirable results. “When we deposit a very thin layer of hafnia on top of silicon, followed by a layer of ytterbium disilicate, the oxygen that passes through the ytterbium disilicate creates a chemical reaction with the underlying materials to form the hafnon,” University of Virginia researcher Jeroen Deijkers said. Deijkers explained some of the advantages of this method. For example, in addition to making engine parts last longer despite the high temperatures associated with combustion, this...
“Tesla’s sexual identity is, as you might expect, complicated by the fact that we have to be careful not to project current values or concerns onto the past,” explains W. Bernard Carlson, a professor of humanities at University of Virginia and author of the book Tesla: Inventor of the Electrical Age. “We tend to view sexuality in binary [male/female] categories when individuals living a century ago had more fluid notions of sexuality.” After 15 years of studying Tesla, Carlson says he “came to the conclusion that [Tesla] was most likely gay and had two significant emotional relationships with ...
Dewey Cornell, a professor with the University of Virginia, created the threat assessment protocol with his team two decades ago. He works to update and sell this protocol to create safer schools. Cornell says there are mainly two types of problems that schools face when talking about threats: “There’s a large number of students who make threats and don’t have a serious intent to carry them out. That’s very concerning and needs a response. And then there’s a small number of students who may have serious intent and require protective action, maybe involvement of law enforcement and other more c...
Dr. Bill Petri with the University of Virginia says although mixing and matching may theoretically give you better protection, in reality they are yielding the same results. “Any of the boosters works equally well,” the doctor said. “The real-world experience is that all three vaccines work really well to boost any of the vaccines that you got.”
(Commentary by Terry Turner, professor emeritus of urology) Many of us are proud to be known as Georgians. After all, our state is known for its hospitality and laid-back ways as well as for being the seat of Atlanta, the commercial dynamo of our region. Yes, we have our problems — racial divisions and economic disparities among them — but many Georgians reflect positively on the often hard-scrabble history their ancestors, black or white, have fought through to get us where we are today.
(By Kimberly A. Whittier, Frank M. Sands Sr. Associate Professor of Business Administration) Imagine that you have just been promoted to manager at a large food company and will be in charge of a popular candy brand primarily sold in grocery stores. The brand has been declining for some time, and you have to figure out the source of the decline and fix it. What do you do? If you’re like most marketers, you turn to readily available reports and market studies to find the answer. But is this the best approach?
When it comes to preschool education, many parents develop a laundry list of concerns. While some of these queries are valid, one question that may be unnecessary is whether a child is ready for a structured learning environment at age 3 or 4. According to new research from the University of Virginia, even as young as 2 years old can make the transition from home to preschool developmentally and socially with relative ease.
Assistant professor at University of Virginia, Seanna Leath, researched how the expectations of strength placed upon Black girls and women is harmful. In her findings she discovered this demographic of women responds to hardships by concealing trauma. Oftentimes, showing weakness or anger is often frowned upon by family members.
