A Charlottesville artist is working to brighten the lives of some of central Virginia's youngest hospital patients. Over the past two months, Renee Balfour has been conducting free art lessons for children. The oil paintings that come out of those sessions are then sold, with the proceeds benefiting the University of Virginia Children's Hospital.

Bob McDonnell announced legislation Monday that would expand the number of slots for Virginians seeking to attend state colleges and establish a long-term link between higher education and job creation. … McDonnell said the commission's work already is having an impact.
