Coach Mike London has helped the Cavalier football team grow to new heights, and it seems he is climbing the charts when it comes to popularity. "Coach London has done a great job in terms of turning around the program and getting some excitement at the stadium," said Art Fuller while heading to Saturday's game.
For the second year in a row, Virginia used an overtime goal to knock off Michigan State, 3-2, in the NCAA field hockey tournament. This time, it was a little tougher for the Cavaliers. Freshman Elly Buckley scored the tying goal in the second half and the winner in sudden death to send the No. 3 Cavaliers into today’s second round against No. 6 Princeton. Virginia (17-3) trailed for a good portion of the game and sweated out a potential game-winner that was just a bit off before sealing the victory on Saturday at the University Hall Turf Field.
A full two years after the housing-based financial crisis ignited, we again find monetary authorities in the center of the debate over how to deal with an economy still under stress. That realization led me to call together some leading practitioners of monetary affairs to assess how this newfound prominence stacks up against the immense challenges now facing the United States and global economies. Led by former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, People’s Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan, former Bank of Japan Governor Toshihiko Fukui and European Centra...
For the first time, researchers at the University of Virginia Health System have imaged the wall of carotid arteries that send blood to the brain while patients are being examined for symptoms consistent with an acute stroke or a mini-stroke (transient ischemic attack or TIA.) What the researchers found contributes much to the current theory about how strokes, and heart attacks as well, occur. Namely, that bleeding into the plaque in the arterial wall leads to strokes, not tight blockages as was once thought in the 1970's and 80's. Prior studies of this type were usually performed weeks or mon...
An analysis by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission and economists at the University of Virginia concluded that the state would need to attract 160,000 new jobs to break even on revenue, or 12 times more than even their rosiest scenarios can conjure.

The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia is showing people how to get their ideas off the ground. Through seminars and workshops, college graduates are learning about the lifecycles of a business, how to formulate ideas, and how to pitch those ideas. For some, it is an alternative to entering the tough job market.
The Virginia field hockey team advanced to the NCAA Final Four with a 4-2 win against Princeton Sunday at University Hall Turf Field. Freshman Elly Buckley scored two goals while junior Page Selenski and sophomore Tara Puffenberger each had one. UVA will be making its second consecutive NCAA semifinal appearance.
A student volunteer center at the University of Virginia is growing by leaps and bounds. Madison House is an organization that pairs students with volunteer opportunities in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Right now, Madison House has 150 volunteer sites, and more than 3,000 student volunteers. Madison House Communications Director Ben Eppard said, "Madison House has always done a great job connecting community need with the passion of university students. When those two things match up, we make a new volunteer site."
Scholars from around the world will participate in a two-day summit at the University of Virginia beginning Sunday. The talks will focus on the responsibilities and opportunities for universities in an increasingly global society. The panel will include university deans and administrators. Their discussions will focus on the role of students in developing a global university, and how to pay for it.
