The University of Virginia Health System celebrated an important milestone on Sunday. The health system's transplant center has performed its 1,000th liver transplant since opening in 1989. U.Va. is the first medical center in Virginia, and the Carolinas, to reach the milestone. U.Va. transplant survivors and physicians gathered on grounds to mark the occasion.

Health care futurist Jeff Goldsmith says health IT adoption has lagged in the U.S. because there's no definable return on investment. UVA is taking steps to create a safer environment for students in reaction to several recent incidents. The University of Virginia is preparing to show off the newest addition to grounds at a ceremony Friday. Governor Bob McDonnell, university President Teresa Sullivan and others will be on hand for a dedication of the completed South Lawn. The $105 million addition includes three academic buildings: Nau Hall, Gibson Hall, and the commons building connecting the two.

Dozens gathered on grounds at the University of Virginia on Thursday to celebrate the groundbreaking of a $13.5 million theatre. The Ruth Caplin Theatre, named in honor of donors Ruth and Mortimer Caplin, will be an addition to UVA's drama building. Once completed, the addition will feature a 300 seat theatre, dressing rooms and an expanded lobby. A single-center study suggests that more patients with celiac disease may stop responding to their gluten-free diets, researchers reported here. The retrospective chart review found 17 patients that had refractory celiac disease -- which ultimately responded to thiopurines, Christopher Hammerle, MD, and Sheila Crowe, MD, of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, reported at the American College of Gastroenterology meeting. ...
